MOBILE, ALA. Ben Boulware faced a diverse array of offensive game plans during a decorated four-year career at Clemson. None of them were quite as unique as the one Auburn used in the season-opener. Boulware, who made 55 career-appearances (33 starts) at linebacker, revisited the first step on his team’s championship run Tuesday at the Senior Bowl’s media night. “It was definitely different,” Boulware said of Auburn’s strategy.
Auburn made 22 substitutions at quarterback with Sean White, John Franklin III and Jeremy Johnson rotating from one play to the next. The team also had multiple players (Kerryon Johnson and Chandler Cox) take snaps out of the wildcat formation. “They were doing it so sporadic and randomly it didn’t allow them to get them in a groove,” Boulware said. “It slowed them down.” ESPN announcer Brent Musburger called Auburn’s plan of attack in the 19-13 loss was the “most bizarre use of quarterbacks” he’s seen in 40-plus years of broadcasting.
Auburn wanted to catch Clemson’s defense off guard, but the substitutions had the opposite effect according to Boulware. “I remember Franklin, he was more of a runner, and White was more of a thrower,” Boulware said. “We could just eliminate what they were going to do based on who they were bringing in.” Boulware said the defense didn’t need to make many adjustments as Auburn went from White to Franklin to Johnson and back again. I have read that statement multiple times this week and it is just mildly amusing. Is that really how you feel? I am not trolling, it's just getting old talking about Hugh. I would think you will be disappointed since he is an offensive minded coach who helped change the way offense is played nowadays. You guys used to swear by his genius so this is a little unexpected. Is it still gonna be Gus's offense?
I am not one that believes this...he clearly didn't trust CRL and whatever dysfunction that caused I hope he and Chip fix it. I however do not want him out of the offense. I believe it is lazy to believe that Gus and his meddling caused the issues with the offense in 2015 and 2016. The oline both seasons was average to below average. The QB play both seasons was below average to atrocious. Anyone working with that would struggle.
Criticize Gus all you want for player development (though neither OL or QB development is directly connected to the Head Coach). Criticize Gus for being a poor judge of QB talent (though NFL GM's lose their jobs with more resources and information to pick QB's every year). In the end, IMO his biggest mistake was hiring CRL in 2013. IMO he was always a weakness. To his credit he was likable and was often defended by insiders reporting on Auburn. Which is why you see Auburn posters now defending CRL when 3 years ago they criticized him as dead weight on the staff.

Chip has implemented some unique passing concepts that should benefit AU big time this year....IF Gus truly keeps his hands off
Does that mean y'all are bringing back the RPO where the linemen all fire off and block 5-6 yards downfield as the WR's all run fly patterns?

Not buying it anymore than your wife is buying into your 9 inch description.

I want him to be fired and never wanted him to be hired. He's about to lose his 4th straight game to bama and UGA. First coach in Auburn history to lose three straight to both of those and keep his job.

Most of his decisions are good after game three. His problem is having too much time in the off-season thinking up crazy shite. Hopefully Lindsey will have the balls to keep him grounded.
Yeah, those UGA and bama games were pure genius!

Genius is your word, not mine.
We had no QB and both 1 and 2 RBs were hurt in those games. UGA game should have been won. Bama game was what was expected.
