So Auburn fans want Gus to stay out of the offense?

I have read that statement multiple times this week and it is just mildly amusing. Is that really how you feel? I am not trolling, it's just getting old talking about Hugh. I would think you will be disappointed since he is an offensive minded coach who helped change the way offense is played nowadays. You guys used to swear by his genius so this is a little unexpected. Is it still gonna be Gus's offense?

The problem with Gus is he can't get out of his own way -- he overthinks it when things aren't running like the 2010 and 2013 teams. His route trees also need updating. Also, Rhett Lashlee had been with him for years. Chip Lindsey coming in will help freshen up our offense by incorporating aspects of Gus' offense into his own.

Not exactly, we want Gus to stop running the offense. If he wants to be the OC, then go somewhere and become an OC. As a head coach, he will have input into the offense.

As the previous poster indicated, Gus needed some fresh thinking.

This is the same Gus that put 630 yards on Saban/Smart a few years ago. The problem with Gus is if he doesn't have a QB, he tries to experiment with one.

As the defenses adjusted, Gus basically just scaled back his offense to its base. Yes, AU could still hammer away in the run game to get 8 wins but were struggling and would have continued to struggle against any team with equal or better talent. I'm ok with a simple offense but Gus refused to except that the best version of his offense is running the crap out of the zone read and inverted veer and throwing bombs the few times we decide to throw it. He never really wanted his QB's running the ball and it just made his offense too easy to defend, especially with the basic route tree and concepts. Chip has implemented some unique passing concepts that should benefit AU big time this year....IF Gus truly keeps his hands off

Sure, He has too much to do as HC and is good for consulting with the OC. It is best he not be the full time OC.

Is there a problem? Is it not common for that to happen?

Gus can't adapt and tries to control too much from the sidelines. Reads are made from the sidelines and despite looking like an offense with options, the options are pre determined and when option 1 is defended, the offense breaks down.

Gus Malzahn's offense, IMO, isn't the problem. His scheme is outstanding for the running game, but it definitely needed upgrading within the route trees. Also, his sporadic play calling and personnel grouping drives me insane.

Yes but it needs some tweaking and he needs to stop calling plays. It's not easy being head coach and a play caller. Its clear Malzahn has struggled wearing both hats in a game. He needs to set the direction but the hope is Lindsey will improve in game adjustments and bolster passing attack. Basically, he's needs to go from an offensive coordinator who happens to be head coach to a head coach with an OC background. At least that's my opinion

I think his offense is fine. The playcalling had gotten stale. And we all saw his panic mode with personnel when things weren't going his way. His passing concepts have always been extremely vanilla.
As others said he needed some fresh ideas other than "yessir" Lashlee. Hopefully Chip can spice up the passing game along with a better QB.

His offense is great, needed some new input and someone that can call plays while he's HC

Even at its best, Gustav's play calling always tended to go downhill over the course of a game. He would do a great job game planning, and would script out the first couple of possessions, and we would generally look unstoppable. But then he would get predictable, better defenses would adjust, and we'd bog down in the second half.

Prime example of this was UGa in 2013. We scored on 6 of our first 7 possessions (would have been 7-7 if not for a blocked FG) and had nearly 500 yards of offense midway through the 3rd, but were nearly shutout the rest of the way.

Lashlee got scapegoated, but most AU fans think Gustav's tendencies were too easy for good DCs to figure out. Hope is that Lindsay (who coached under Malzahn as an analyst at AU in 2013) will display some fresh ideas in the play calling department.

As an outsider, it seems like Gus tries to do too much sometimes as if he's going to fool a defense 5 different ways on one play.

I also am curious about his pee-wee football kick return tactics.

Auburn has been one of the best kick returning teams around since Malzahn has been HC, so it seems to work out

Yeah, I'm not sure what that even means. Though Lsu fans are consistently some of the dumbest posters here so no shock.

Without a doubt. I've been lurking and not posting for oh, over 7 years now so I feel like I've got a pretty good handle. LSU fans are easily the most delusional. To be fair to them there is a lot more and this is their home site though, so it makes sense.

I'm talking about the putting Franklin back there last year. Every time I saw it, it backfired and went poorly. You don't need to be a jackass.

Generalize and then call people a jackass for not interpreting a specific moment in the kicking game correctly...
