Interesting thread. Thanks for sharing.

Why in the world would Skip make that up if it didn't happen?

Have you never 'misremembered' something? Sometimes we have conversations that we remember differently later on. It isn't intentional - but it happens.

I don't care one way or the other. But to question timelines is fair. It isn't an attack on his character

Just curious.

No--but Saban to Miami to Alabama, and replacing him is one of the biggest things to happen in the SEC in the last 20 years.

There's a guy who was involved in the entire process who is giving the full story. It's interesting. Find another thread to troll in, sister fricker.

I just think its funny. In the moment everyone (especially on forums like this) wants to know what is going on, who was offered, or who turned down jobs. Here we have the guy that was in the middle of the process saying what happened, and some people think they have more info on the situation than the former AD does.

First, Skip said it was HW Bush that called him not W. And Aggie can laugh all they want but HW and Skip had a good relationship. Skip missed the White House trip after the championship in '91 due to surgery. He got to go in '93 and they remained friends after that trip. Skip was also very active in the College Baseball Foundation which HW was heavily involved with too.

Ah, that makes a hell of a lot more sense. Edited OP. I didn't start listening until the second hour.

Very interesting interview.

Not surprised about the GHWB tidbit. He was fond of Slocum.

I know it was a troll, I just wanted to see if he could back up the statement.

- Adding one here: Huizenga apparently gave Terry Saban a $500k check for her interior decorations while they were trying to lure Nick

Impossible. Pretty sure the fine, upstanding, "in-the-know" members of the SEC Rant have refuted these.............

What's really interesting about this is Skip said his list started with Spurrier, Meyer & Del Rio but Saban assured him all season long that he wasn't leaving. By the time he left on Christmas Spurrier and Urban had new gigs and they moved on from Del Rio because they didn't want to wait for the NFL season to finish. They also interviewed Jimbo but Saban didn't give him a good recommendation so they didn't give him much thought.

What is he wrong about? And Saban left LSU around Christmastime 2004. Skip was basically saying he thought he might be able to divert Spurrier from SC after Spurrier decided to go there, but didn't think it would be a good sell with LSU fans and the Board, who absolutely loathed him for the unrelenting asswhoopings he levied on us in the 90s.

Then Skip, God Bless him and I'll always respect the guy and enjoyed my visit out there when the new baseball facility was dedicated .... but he's obviously more senile than Spurrier these days.

Spurrier would have never left SCAR for LSU ... and that's the simplistic version. There is much more to the story than that but the bottom line is Skip is .... putting it kindly, mis-remebering what actually went down.

And HW is a traitor phaggot.

So it is true that Miss Terry was the catalyst for Nick coming to Bama? Mal Moore said many times that he had to sell her on the job moreso than Nick.

That's what Moore said in his book. Good thread, nice to have this than the other troll crap.

Good God some of you are obtuse. Skip never said that Spurrier was considering coming to LSU in 2005. He was hired at USC before Saban left LSU. Skip just said it was his OPINION he could have talked Spurrier into leaving USC for LSU. He never said any of those talks actually happened

FWIW, I think Del Rio would have become LSU's HC in 2005 had the timing been a little better. There was a "clandestine" meeting set between Del Rio and Bertman somewhere between Jacksonville and Orlando (where LSU was playing in the Cap One bowl on 1/1/05). The NFL season was still going on and Del Rio was instructed by his agent not to make contact with Bertman for fear of potentially violating his contract with Jacksonville. As a result, the meeting between the two didn't happen. Bertman didn't want to drag the search on any longer, so he hired Miles on 1/2/05. The rest is history.

The same person who told me that also said that Petrino absolutely bombed the interview. Skip basically backed that up today

Re Del Rio, Skip added this: all the shot callers were in one room in the Orlando area, preparing to offer Del Rio the HC job. However, it was in Del Rio's contract with Jacksonville that any one wanting to hire him had to talk to the owner first. But the owner was in Europe & the LSU folks were never able to contact him timely. In the meantime, Skip told the meeting "let's take football off the table & discuss the type of person we want". And he said CLM was the choice after that discussion. Said he had gotten sick of the "3 and dones" in the coaching profession & he wanted a HC who would stay at LSU & raise his family. CLM met that criteria hands down. Liked Petrino as an offensive coach but not as a person & confirmed that BP screwed up the interview: "that's the reason you have an interview, to see what kind of person someone is". Repeatedly used the phrase "Nick wore us down"; "Sexton was in my office every yr with, not in any order, "the Bears want Nick, the Lions want Nick, the Jags want Nick, the Fins want Nick". Not a current fan of Kiffen, either. Nick did not give Jimbo a good recommendation. He covered several decades of LSU & the SEC in those 2 hrs, rambling a lot but saying a lot, too.

The only obtuse fricktards in this conversation are the ones insisting that Skip never approached Spurrier (by proxy) or that Skip had a chance at luring Spurrier away from SCAR when, in fact, Spurrier has already addressed all of that repeatedly over the years and even included it in his book.

He was approached by LSU and immediately said "don't waste your time - I'm not interested." (paraphrasing)

He went on to say that the two best jobs in the SEC are Georgia and LSU because of their combination of talent base, great fans and being the lone big dogs instate recruiting.

He went further by saying Mal Moore had contacted him in '06 I think it was, about the Bama job, and he told Moore the same thing he told LSU's proxy, "not interested ... I can accomplish a lot of firsts at South Carolina, they are in The East, I'm committed to them, I'm close to Crescent Beach and I'm really close to Augusta National (and SC alum Hootie Johnson was Chairman at the time and Spurrier was probably thinking membership like Holtz got).

Skip, God Bless him, is either mis-remebering how it all went down or he was dreaming during the interview.

Furthermore, Spurrier has stated that while LSU never officially approached his agent, he felt like the job was his if he had wanted it because of the overtures ...

With all of that on record and with the well documented turndown of the Bama overtures (in which he said, I'm not interested but you need to go back and ask Saban again), it's safe to say he wouldn't have taken the LSU job and Skip knew it so Skip did the wise thing and avoided the chance of being publicly turned-down.

ETA: And all this nonsense about Spurrier not being a good fit at LSU because of fan hatred is just that ... nonsense.
