Skip was the LSU baseball coach who won 5 NCs in the 90s. He was LSU AD for majority of Saban's tenure, and hired Miles.

Interview

Thread on real rant

An LSU poster summed it up here and I'm adding some:

Some of the highlights:

- Confirmed interviews with Nutt and Petrino in 2004.
- George HW Bush personally called Skip to pitch RC Slocum as HC.
- Reached out to Frank Beamer
- Skip wanted Spurrier but felt like it would be a tough sell to the board and fanbase. Skip thought he still could have gotten him away from SCar.
- Skip wanted a coach that would be at LSU for a long time. Miles having young kids made him an attractive candidate.
- Saban didn't want to leave but told Skip if he turned down the best offer ever from an NFL franchise then he would never get another one.
- Saban dragged his feet for over a month which hurt the search
- Miles turned down Michigan when Hoke got the job and Michigan was offering more money
- Adding one here: Huizenga apparently gave Terry Saban a $500k check for her interior decorations while they were trying to lure Nick
- He does not like Petrino at all... apparently he made a poor joke during interview process as well
- Thinks Lane Kiffin is a good coach but "not a good fit"

Thats an awful lot of talk about the distant past

How does he feel about LSU being a 3rd tier program moving forward? Thats what I want to know

Asked Saban about Jimbo when he was leaving and Saban said he wasn't ready. So Bertman didn't want to interview him knowing he wasn't gonna give him the job because he likes him too much.

I question legitimacy of interview or Bertman's memory considering Spurrier and Les Miles were both hired for the 2005 season.

So you are implying that it didn't happen?

Spurrier was hired a month before Saban left because Saban dragged his feet, but Skip felt like he could still get Spurrier even though he had agreed to coach at South Carolina

Skip strongly suggested Les keep Jimbo and Muschamp but Muschamp went with Saban to Miami because he felt that going to NFL was quickest way to get a coaching job

Always liked Skip .... but he's wrong about Spurrier. Spurrier has said so many times.

Either way, we'll never know because neither of them acted on it ... but Spurrier was hired in December of 2004. Correct me if I'm wrong but is there not something askew with Skip's timeline if that's the case?

Yeah that's actually my personal favorite. I'm not sure I believe it but it's Skip.

Saban didn't leave until Christmas Day 2004

Skip never said he TRIED to get Spurrier, just that he wanted him and felt he could have got him if he could get everyone on board. People didnt like Spurrier after he spanked our arse every year in the 90's

Why in the world would Skip make that up if it didn't happen?

What is he wrong about? And Saban left LSU around Christmastime 2004. Skip was basically saying he thought he might be able to divert Spurrier from SC after Spurrier decided to go there, but didn't think it would be a good sell with LSU fans and the Board, who absolutely loathed him for the unrelenting asswhoopings he levied on us in the 90s.

Skip also said that Saban is a good guy, he is just very demanding and its very tiring for everyone working with him.

Exactly my point. I don't believe he was in talks with Spurrier who had just signed his contract with South Carolina.

Do you see anywhere in that statement that Ship was in talks with Spurrier?

He never was and he never said he was in talks with him after Spurrier signed with USC.
