If Clowney is as NFL-ready and destructive at the collegiate level as we all believe then perhaps the writer should take a different tack and advise opposing QB's hoping to be drafted to sit out.

I think Clowney is the clear 2014 #1 pick...as of right now. The one thing that could change is if a QB shoots up the draft boards. The article is interesting, I think it would be a real puss move, but it does make you think.

The system is flawed without question. Clowney SHOULD have the option of going to the NFL. The free market should dictate his situation and it's ridiculous that a player can't go and make millions of dollars and instead must stay in school, esp because the chances or injury are so much greater in football and the physical toll of the game is so harsh. BTW, I understand this would apply to Johnny Manziel as well.
It's about choice. You have to allow people to make them, even if they are the wrong choices. I look at a guy like Maurice Clarett for instance and honestly wonder if he had been able to go to the NFL instead of being a farce of a college player before losing his eligibility and having nowhere to go for a year what might have been. If a kid doesn't want to be a college student they shouldn't have to be, excuse me a legal adult.
Clowney will likely get insurance and that's all well and good but it can't really cover him properly. He is a guy that has been awfully clear he is all about playing at the next level so he should have that option. He can't really improve his draft stock but he can certainly harm it.
I don't think the NFL would see the "1 and done" situation of the NBA either. You just don't have as many kids physically mature enough at 18 to play in the NFL like they can in the NBA. It's really a very small amount of athletes we are talking about. Moreso, unlike in basketball if a kid doesn't make an NFL roster he has nowhere to go. In basketball a kid can go to the NBDL or Europe or elsewhere to play and either make a living or work their way in the league. A football player would have to be a LOT more careful. Some kids will make mistakes but that's life. You can't have freedom without responsibility.
BTW, I really think a lot of kids will stay anyway to continue to improve draft stock. The NFL wants more developed players than the NBA where they will take a "project" more readily.

It is about choice.
The NFL is a company that choices who they allow to participate in their game...just like any other company.
They spend millions of dollars annually to market themselves a certain way and allowing young ppl in is not on their agenda.

He should file the lawsuit and leave for the NFL right now. Leave college football behind and say goodbye to the use of young men for free and make them pay for your services. Yes, he should leave.

Good post, though I will say that I feel that GMs overreaching on project players is probably why the NBA instituted their age requirement rule. Not for the NCAA, not for the players, but to save itself from GMs trying to bumble into the next Kevin Garnett and fans getting the next Jonathan Bender.

Seriously, couldn't he go into the supplemental draft? I'm sure there are several teams who would give up their 1st or 2nd rounder to take him.
