Absolutely. And he's also had the #1 clasds in the country for 5 years running. I'm just explaining what others in the thread are saying. Alabama fans seem to be perplexed that because they have by far the very best players, facilities and coaches that people think they should win every year.
Saban won the 2009 BCS national championship 2 years after coming to Alabama. The 2007 recruiting class was mainly Shula's with no 5 stars in it, ranked #13 (7th in the SEC). It had only three 4-stars in it, Michael Ricks (academics ruled ineligible), Luther Davis (Saban's 1st Louisiana trophy), Brandon Gibson (really didn't pan out, played in only 4 games in 2009).

The 2008 class was very much better, ranked #3. Bama's 1st 5-stars in years.... Julio ( ), Tyler Love (didn't live up to expectations, played in six games as a reserve offensive tackle), & BJ Scott (loved him but could not find a spot for him, redshited in 2009, then transferred).

Bama won the 2009 National Championship with a Shula recruited, 3-star quarterback (McElroy), Shula's players (Tiffin, Arenas, Maze, Deaderick, Eryk Anders, Mike McCoy, OT Drew Davis, OG Mike Johnson), and Saban's sophmores (Julio, Ingram, Dareus, McClain, Upshaw, Hightower).

We also have an incoming 5 star in some guy named Shea Patterson. He'll probably underachieve like the first two.

Just sad.

What about all those first round picks recruited by Sherman?

What about them? A few first rounders can't really play 22 positions.

Manziel was a 3* most were offering at safety and never played for Sherman. Likely never would have played for Sherman as Jameil Showers was still above him on the depth chart until KK took a flyer on him, 2 weeks b4 Florida.

Mike Evans was a PF in a SF body. He decided to try football and it went like every other hard working bball tweeter story goes. He worked hard until he ran a 4.5 and became a star. Also never played for Sherman.

Then three OL all 4*'s from the same class. Sherman was a great OL coach, and had playing time to sell. They Had respected coaching and 4 years worth of film. Sumlin staggered them to where they each got to play LT at least one year, in a pass heavy offense against SEC DE's.

Sherman wasn't an awful talent evaluator/recruiter, but he really only had one great class at one position. 2010 OL. he was very average at the rest, and below average on Defense most of his classes.

Couple that with the inability to inspire a team, and lack of depth and you can see why in 2011 we started #8 and blew 6 halftime leads.

Idk if that's sarcasm, but you do realize that McClain, Mosley, Hightower, Upshaw, and Johnson were all 4* on the final rankings right?

Thats 2 Butkus winners, 4 AAs, and 3 team captains. Also, 2 of them have Super Bowl rings and one of them got robbed of the DROTY.

2007 Saban got to Bama in January. 2007 recruiting class was signed a month later in February.

That is their point. Why hasn't he turned them into that functioning unit? I mean, with the huge talent gap that he has he should win everything if he is as good a coach as many make him out to be.

And why does Richt get a pass with you?

"Richt isn't as great of a recruiter as he should be, so he gets a pass for not having great results"

Isn't that what you are essentially saying by giving Richt a pass on his results because his recruiting has been somewhat lackluster? That is such a loser's mentality.

Not sarcasm. I'm disappointed in last year's linebackers.

I know about Hightower, Mosley, McClain & Upshaw. They carried on the Alabama tradition of LBU. Three of them were 1st round draft picks, and the other should have been.

But I'm disappointed in last year's linebackers. Hoping Ragland, Evans, Foster and the others step up this year. And hoping we get a couple of LB recruits that Bama's recruiting this year.

Because it is impossible to win everything every year. The greatest baseball team ever lost 40% of their games. It is especially hard in college football because one loss can knock you out of winning a natty title.

Congrats on using a recruiting service that wasn't even established at the time to prove your point.

Now head over to rivals and check your numbers again.

Unless you're trying to say that Rolando McClain wasn't a top 50 player coming out of high school. Then you're just a moron.

ETA: it even has D Goode listed twice on there. You really didn't pay attention to how bad 247s retroactive classes are listed, huh?

who the hell would call his recruiting lackluster? He's averaged a top 10 class over his entire career. The glamour comes off of that when you realize some of our conference opponents have a handful of top 2 classes and we don't, but still...his recruiting is anything but lackluster.

If only it were as simple as recruiting Louisiana.
