If New Orleans had a baseball team I'd root for them. I, of course, root for the Hornets/Pelicans. But they weren't there when I lived in LA. And I refuse to just make a switch.

I'm a Laker fan in my soul. P&G.

Around 2004, there were several good internal changes made within the Saints organization regarding their marketing. Couple that with all the events of Katrina (national sympathy for the city/team and the subsequent unity of the team/city/fanbase) and a SB winning season, the Saints acquired alot of fans who were not previously affiliated with a NFL team. Americans love underdogs and feel-good stories...prior to the 2009 season, the Saints were both. I don't think it has much of anything to do with converting Cowboy fans.

Also around that time is when sports packages became available to watch any team in the country on your TV instead of only the local teams that are always shown.

Now I can follow the Seahawks (for example) and watch every game instead of only the ones when they play the Chiefs or Cowboys (my market's regional teams, plus they show almost every Steelers game for some reason in this area).

I'm the opposite of the question in the OP and it is interesting getting to see the other side of things as a Niner fan since most Saints fans seem to hate the 49ers the way LSU fans hate Alabama and a lot of these are the same people.

When the saints won the Super Bowl it was by far the happiest sports moment of my life. If the jazz could have beaten the bulls it would probably be second.

They did national surveys on it. It's part of the reason for the sway in the fan support. Sorry

Ratings from Beaumont-West didn't show more of an increase than other parts of the South. I think Cowboy fans have become quieter since they have realized they aren't going to do shite for the next 5-10 years. I don't think it's them converting

Dale made a really crucial point as well. Kind of a perfect timing of several occurrences.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you. (on the sympathy thing)

And I guess I see your point on Cowboy fans just quieting down, for obvious reasons.

Born in New Orleans (well Metairie but Texans don't know what that shite is), but moved to Texas and went to A&M.

I'm a Saints fan cuz I'm a born and raised Louisianian, and the Saints are the home team.

I had family influences when I was a kid that push me in the direction of Bama. I was a Bama fan in Louisiana before I had ever heard of LSU. When I was a kid LSU football was not very popular. Even in Louisiana.

It's probably different in south Louisiana. I'm from central Louisiana. I'm 33, and it seems to me that people here didn't really become big LSU fans until around year 2000.
