You probably know that some coaches have had immediate success at power schools. Jim Tressel won a national title in his second season at Ohio State. Urban Meyer won a national title in his second season at Florida and his third season at Ohio State. Gene Chizik won a national championship in his second season at Auburn. Gus Malzahn played for a national championship in his second season at Auburn. Larry Coker won a national title in his second season at Miami, taking over a loaded squad. Mark Richt won the SEC in his second season at Georgia. Pete Carroll won the Pac-12 in his second season at USC and national championships in his third and fourth seasons. Nick Saban won the SEC in his second season at LSU and the national title in his third season at Alabama.

But other than Coker and Richt, the others had been head coaches for several years – and in some cases, many years – before being crowned a national champ.

Saban won his first national title in his 10th season of coaching; he now has five. Meyer won his first national title in his sixth season; He now has three. Tressel was a head coach for 15 season at Youngstown State (and won four Division 1-AA titles) before going to Ohio State. Carroll was an NFL coach for four years before he went to USC.

Les Miles won a national title at LSU in his seventh season as a head coach. Vince Dooley won his lone national title in his 17th season at Georgia. Gen. Robert Neyland won the first of his national crowns in his 12th season at Tennessee. Shug Jordan took seven seasons to win a national title at Auburn. John Vaught won it all in his 13th season at Ole Miss.

And perhaps the greatest college football coach of all, Bear Bryant, was a head coach for 17 seasons before he won his national title; it came in his fourth season at Alabama, and he eventually won six.

This just seems to prove that once at most powers you need to win fast. Otherwise it is best to cut your teeth at a smaller school.

So what you're saying is, Kirby Smart is likely to have some growing pains?

Wouldn't you think. He hasn't had to make the final decision on the hard things. May take some time to learn.

So succeeding usually takes time? some writer has a herculean handle on the least difficult to see thoughts.

Wasn't it first for both?

For the record, I think Kirby is gonna be a great head coach, eventually, but he's gonna get Baptism by Fire in the SEC so UGA is gonna have to be patient.

I agree Kirby is going to be exactly the kind of coach that UGA needs after Richt. I will be surprised if he doesn't win a title there.

Interesting thread.

Then you have other very successful coaches who had the misfortune of coaching in the heydey of other great coaches
(Charlie Mac/Bear, Miles/Saban), although hardly nobody could beat them.
e.g. Charlie Mac, LSU's winningest coach, only beat the Bear a few times, but still managed to field 2 Top-5 teams, 7 Top-10 teams, 13 bowl appearances and 2 SEC titles.

And if Miles was just 5-5 vs Saban instead of 3-7, he would be regarded a little higher than he is. Given what Saban has done the last 8 years, I think Miles has done pretty well. I know he's the only coach in America that's played Saban head to head 10 times, with 7 of them coming down to the final minute...

His whole premise is stupid. He's factoring tenures at second rate programs as a justification for patience. Since Saban couldn't win a national title at Toledo or Michigan State, we should sit around and wait for shitty coaches to get good?

Bob Stoops changed things. You can't use coaches from 50-100 years ago as an excuse. General Neyland, Shug Jordan, etc. have nothing to do with this, and including Bryant is just laughable since he was clearly always elite.

As per usual, Hyams is garbage.

Was his sixth season as a head coach, and the third school where he'd been pretty successful. Not really the same as Coker or Chizik.

Miles won a NC in his 7th season, but won the title in his 3rd year at LSU.
(And he went to the SECG in his first season, while playing 12 consecutive weeks without a bye, then destroying favored Da U in the bowl game.)

Paul Dietzel won the NC in his 3rd season in Baton Rouge.

Mike Archer finished 5th in the nation and 10-1-1 in his first season at LSU.

Curley Hallma........well....

Probably, but he's poised for early success. The team is loaded, he's a hell of a recruiter, and he's coached under Nick Saban, Mark Richt, Bobby Bowden, and Chris Hatcher. The only thing Smart doesn't have under his belt is the final word as the head man, but I honestly think he's been prepped to be a head coach for several years now.

He could blow his first big opportunity like Boom, but I expect he'll do very well, and it probably won't take too long.

Only took Saban four yrs at LSU, and Miles only 3 yrs at LSU..to grab their first natty.

I see a pattern!

Me too, but it means you have to get rid of Miles and get a new coach to test it out.

Many coaches that win a national title in their first few years typically dumb luck into it as much as anything.

The fact many of them disappear forever (ala Coker or Chizik) speaks to that.
