If I had the time I bet I could come damn close to getting a real number on the total living Bama alums.

It's amazing that such a statistical savant has yet to provide any quantitative support for his assertions in this thread.

With the rapid increase in Bama's enrollment recently, they will top AU fairly quick, just because of the size increase and total amount of students now compared to the 80's 70's 60's etc....

the 70's is when schools started actually getting legit enrollments compared to now.

We all suck in comparison to A&M's alumni base, they have been a large school for a very long time

If Arkansas won anything of any importance, it would still be just Arkansas residents and alumni cheering.

When Alabama wins anything of any importance, it's like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon that decides allegiance. If your momma's daddy's sister's half retarded niece went to Bama, you've got yourself a place on the sidewalk.

Auburn has a VERY small number of sidewalks

can anyone prove this? Are there any numbers to back this up?

Do actually believe these programs would survive without the support of a non graduate fanbase?

I'm sure it can be proven Auburn has fewer than comparable schools. Whether anyone is going to invest resources in doing so is another matter.

It's a claim I hear a lot but haven't seen anyone prove. Just curious if I was missing some data that had been posted before.

a&m has also. a bunch of the itinerant lawn mowers around here seem to have abandoned their UT headgear and now sport aggie stuff. I would move them up as high as #7. and I have as much proof as anybody.

Saying very few sidewalk fans is probably misleading.

Auburn is a pretty prominent athletic school, so we have a good sized bandwagon.

But practically, it just won't be as big as schools that either don't share a state or dominate their state. Moreover, Auburn's exposure has traditionally been lower than its counterparts, and thus "getting into" Auburn football is more of a challenge. Growing up in Georgia, had I not been around a bunch of alums at my church, it wouldn't have occurred to me with Tech and UGA in the same state.

This is admittedly circumstantial, but I think the statistics would back that practical conclusion up, if they were available.

Every single person that lives in the state of Arkansas is a razorback fan. Alabama has a little competition with Auburn in recruiting fans.

But then you aren't accounting for the sidewalk fans in other states, of which Alabama has every school beat.

Just did dude. I'll break it down for you.

Using the previous link 18% of Alabamians claim to be Auburn only fans. 18% of Alabama is 668,960 (I am using adult numbers here, the survey does not say whom they surveyed so to err on the side of caution I just did the adult population).

AU claims to have 200,000 living alumni. 60% of Auburn students are from Alabama, this number is WAY lower than in the past. So 60% of 200,000 is 120,000.

Therefore Auburn has 120,000 living alumni in Alabama vs. 668,960 fans in Alabama. Therefore your fan base in Alabama is made up of 18% alumni.

Alabama's student population was around 8,000 in 1961. That is the population of Wake Forest. Wake Forest is the smallest BCS school in the country

This is kind of weak, but I'm guessing you don't have all the data you'd like to have.

My contention was that you claimed to have proven something you hadn't even given me a point of reference for. I still don't think your analysis is especially valid, but again, I acknowledge you're having to transpose stuff to get working numbers. So I'll accept 18% as a baseline to use.

I only have the numbers for Auburn. The problem is getting survey numbers on fans and total living alumni. With those two numbers I can get any schools sidewalk fan base.

False.

Not long ago we were a small military school.

I don't but I was trying to be generous to AU. Even the most generous number is not going to top 20%.

Even if I said all 200,000 living Auburn alums lived in the state of Alabama you are still looking at 668,960 AU fans living in the state so even the most generous number would put the alumni percent of the fan base at 30%. Nowhere close to a majority and not in the ballpark of vast majority.

Honestly, UF is probably number 1 simply because of being the flagship school in the 3rd/4th most populous state. Although there are around 380K living alumni.
