SEC expansion

Hypothetically, if the expansions were happening again, who would you choose to be the newest SEC team? Would Mizzou finally make geological sense and move to the west and put Auburn in the SEC East?
Would FSU finally get tired of the "cupcake schedule" and move into a real conference?
Virginia Tech anyone? I hear Hawaii might be interested.

FSU would not add much.
My pref: Virginia or VT and UNC.
Other: Virginia or VT and NC State.
Before Maryland changed conferences I thought they may be an option.

Why do we refuse to understand the basic principals of expansion in this paradigm of CFB? FSU isn't even an option now.
Schools in NC and VA are the most logical choices.

I would expand westward, add two teams and Mizzou to the West, and move Alabama and Auburn to the East.

Before we expand anything, move Mizzou to the West and Auburn to the East. This current divisional alignment makes absolutely no sense.
Having said that, I am a traditionalist. Bring back Georgia Tech and Tulane before you pursue any new teams outside of the conference.
And stay off of my lawn!

Expand the tv market, take over the world.

Well, for one, the SEC was politicing hard to bring FSU
FSU to the SEC

That left Florida State, Miami and South Carolina vying for the second invitation. Florida State was clearly the SEC’s first choice. The major roadblock was scheduling. On August 3, Bobby Bowden admitted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “I like to win games, and I can’t think of a tougher place to do that than the SEC.” Under the proposed division alignment, Florida State would face Florida, Auburn and Alabama every year, which raised objections from FSU Athletic Director Bob Goin. “Most conferences have got two really strong programs,” Bowden continued, “but top to bottom there isn’t one close to the SEC.” Another report, by Mark Maske of the Washington Post, suggested Florida State refused to be in the same conference as Florida because the Gators “once fostered an SEC blackballing of the Seminoles.” In 2001, a Florida Times-Union retrospective quoted a FSU booster as saying, “There was quite a bit of feeling that we didn’t want to be entrapped; a feeling that among some fans that if we go into [the SEC]…we’d be kind of a stepchild.”

I hate tu, but they would bring a lot to the table as far as prestige and history, and more importantly they should be available.
Bring OU with them and you add two of the most storied programs in CFB.
As an Aggie I hate the idea, but who else makes more sense, that is available?
UNC ain't leaving the ACC.
Va Tech? Gimme a break.

GT for sure or move a CUSA team up a few spots. East Carolina? Marshall? Southern Miss?

You do realize how old that is and how much things have changed. The first expansion was about adding a few million dollars via a title game. The latest expansion was about adding millions and millions of dollars via new cable households.
Any expansion now must bring a great gain than the loss of divided value.
"GT for sure or move a CUSA team up a few spots. East Carolina? Marshall? Southern Miss?"
These thoughts reflect a lack of understanding of the subject.

I think they would be a good fit. No way Tulane ever comes back (or GT for that matter - ).

Enlighten me on how FSU wouldnt bring the SEC money? I understand TV markets but, its not like FSU fans stay directly in Tallahassee.

You've completely missed what the latest expansions are about.
It has nothing to do with historical powers.
VT brings more than either Texas or OU simply b/c that would force the SECN on basic cable packages in Virginia.

From the SEC's perspective some combination of UNC, UVA, Duke and/or VaTech makes the most sense. The problem with this is that UNC, UVA and Duke will never leave the ACC. VaTech likely won't leave either. That leaves you NCSU - good luck with that. BTW, if NCSU could pull it off politically, they would bolt for the SEC in a heartbeat since they see themselves in a similar light as TA&M.
If you add TU and OU, then that's too many traditional football powers in one conference and would make the BIG 6 uncomfortable with too much of a "Texas/Western" influence on the conference.

no, you don't.
It's not simply about city markets.
It's about STATE markets.
FSU in the SECN does NOT add a new state to force the SECN onto basic cable packages. Pure and simple. That's why VT or UNC would be more valuable than FSU regardless of their football teams being lesser than.

The SEC would go after a VA school, probably Va Tech and NC State.
