Rich Brooks. Never heard a bad thing about him between Oregon and UK. Always handled himself well and handled a pretty shitty situation at UK well.

He regularly talked shite about other teams and could be a prick at times, but was the era. He also acted great many other times, but I wouldnt say he had the most class of SEC coaches by far

This is dumb. So the Bear wasnt a great HC because his assistants failed as HCs???
So i guess Bill Belichick isnt a good HC either huh?
If anything to me that makes them look better, like they had their hand in everything and carried the team with little help

Bear Bryant, hands down. He could win good and clean and not be a dick to others.
"Sure I'd like to beat Notre Dame, don't get me wrong. But nothing matters more than beating that cow college on the other side of the state."
AU upset the Tide a few days later.
"Here's a twenty, bury two."
Coach Bryant, after being asked to chip in ten dollars
to help cover the cost of a sportswriters funeral.
I do like this one...
Bear Bryant is on record saying, "If a laundromat in Tuscaloosa wants to pick Alabama No. 1, we'll claim it.

Don't forget doing the hoe digging motioning to the Auburn student section or the cracks about Auburn graduates wearing some sort of cheap shoes (Thom McAn?).
Dude had some Stevie Spurrier in him.

I must admit, it was impressive the way he got busted on "60 Minutes" for paying Eric Ramsey and then let Larry Blakeney take the fall. Thats the sign of a real smooth operator.

Shug Jordan --- he is one of those guys that should be thanked that this is in English instead of German.

Sometimes I shudder to think if that situation happened today. Guys like Neyland and Ted Williams just up and left at the height of their careers to do what they had to do (along with millions of others). Just incredible.

A little more liquid courage would make college football a lot more interesting.

Actually I think the Ole Miss fans would agree about Wingnut.

On the field I will give him full credit for being the best ever. Off the field, however, is a totally different story. My father saw him in Vegas once, with several pols & their police escourt. He was so drunk he was trying to piss under the craps table & only the police officers' intervention kept him from being arrested. No social media back to show him for what he was like off the field. And if you honestly think he did not cheat, you're either very young or very naïve. They all cheated back then.

Then no point bringing it up, right?

From the era of when men were men, Bear stood above the rest easily.
He was a great man ... I loved him. I remember exactly where I was the night he died. I was on top of a mountain overlooking the Gatun river in Panama. My RTO was dicking around with his PRC77 trying to pick-up some english speaking news ... and he managed to pick-up a TV station outta the states. We caught it just in time for sports and they were rehashing the fact that The Bear had died. I could not believe it. I had just been home on leave a month before and gone to the Liberty Bowl to see him coach his last game with my Dad and older brother.
I remember where I was when JFK was shot, I remember where I was when MLK and RFK were shot. I remember where I was when we first walked on the moon. I remember where I was when The Bear died and where I was when the Challenger exploded. I guess those are the big news stories of my lifetime.
The Bear really hurt though ... I didn't think it was fair. And now I realize how young he was. I remember the reporter saying The Bear wanted to leave the hospital and go home to Arkansas to do some duck hunting. We hunted the same area around Maddox May and I remembered the two times he had his family group up there when we were there ... we had a family cabin right on the bay (for over 100 years in our family, although we just sold it two years ago), and how he hunted in a regular cap rather than his houndstooth ... I remembered thinking how different he looked in that different cap with a shotgun in his hand climbing down the bank to his boat.
The Bear was a great man.

every coach does this. other than spurrier, i can't think of any coach that doesn't talk up their opponents

Agree, most do, but Saban goes out of his way to talk about other programs, teams and coaches with respect all season and offseason. It's probably close to the norm, but it's just one of those things that seems to get lost in the shuffle with him because of the persona of him being the devil.

Les miles in 2011 in November when asked about playing Alabama again in January.
It would be an honor was his reply and it was the classiest sentence uttered by a human being.
I would have said, we beat the gumps already so bring on someone more deserving.
