Missouri has one elite 8 appearance and 0 regular season conference titles. They are also one of the few 2 seeds to lose to a 15.
Missouri is historically a decent program though. Conference championships, 25 NCAA appearances, 4 Elite Eights, etc.

State is a pretty bad program historically outside of their final four.
Yea, I would agree. They had the one run in 1996 and made the Final Four. Only 10 NCAA appearances, one Elite Eight, which was the Final Four year. 11-10 NCAA Tourney record

No program is close to Alabama, just as no program is close to Kentucky.
Auburn was in a national title game in 2013. LSU in 2011. It's been 10 years since a team besides Kentucky appeared in a national title game, and 22 years since a program besides Kentucky or Florida appeared in a national title game. The gap between Kentucky and everyone else is much bigger than Alabama in foortball, and the gap between Kentucky and Florida and everyone else is even bigger than that
It's been 11 years since a team other than Kentucky or Florida made the Final 4 I believe

Mmm, 4th tier then?
Missouri has a ton of NCAA tourney appearances and until the affliction of KA was a very solid basketball program. Still I don't think they've made the final 4 yet. Does their overall solid body of work put them in the third tier or is it overshadowed by the lack of a Final 4?

Yea - LSU has 3 Final Fours. That solidly puts them a tier above Alabama and Tennessee, who are basically all 3 generally tied outside of those things. However, 3 Final Fours vs 0 Final Fours is a big trump card.

Missouri, Tennessee and Alabama are almost always 3 of the 5-10 teams that are mentioned in the "Best Programs without a Final Four" conversation.
Alabama has been to 8 Sweet 16s. They've been to 1 Elite Eight and 0 Final Fours. Damn it to heck.
Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri have been to a combined 22 Sweet 16's and 0 Final Fours.

So Kentucky at the top. Then Florida and Arkansas. Then LSU. And then a log jam of Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee and Miss State (based on their one big run)?

Yep - I think so.

I wouldn't call us a historically bad program. We do have 6 regular season conference titles and 3 SEC tourney titles. We also had 2 or 3 NCAA appearances we weren't allowed to make in the late 50's/early 60's because of our racist governor.

It goes to show you how difficult advancing in the Big Dance can be. Mizzou, Bama, and the Vols have had some extremely talented teams in the past.

A lot of SEC teams really got screwed by the 1 team per conference rule when Kentucky ran the conference. Really kept down some of the other teams NCAAT numbers.

There is a Big 2 in the SEC.
Alabama and Kentucky.
Alabama and Kentucky.

Yea, State is a tough one. They are clearly behind Alabama and Tennessee in basically every stat group, but they do have a Final Four.
Basically all of our BBall history happened in the last 25 years.

The SEC is hard to quantify nationally pre-1980 or so because Kentucky was the only representative on a national level due to the 1 team per conference in the tournament rule. So, some teams that may have made a run and added some hardware never really got a chance.

If you are going by national titles across all sports its LSU and Arkansas in front of Florida and Georgia.
LSU women's track alone has more national titles then Kentucky in every sport.

Yet Arky or LSU have never won a SEC All Sports Trophy in a long time.

Florida is way more relevant than Arkansas. They have two recent national championships.

Arkansas
