And those 7 OTs are actually pretty exciting/fun

So, in 2003 when Arkansas beat UK in 7OTs 71-63, you thought, "well, the best team won?"

The least exhausted team won that game. As the article states, an offensive tackle that found himself playing QB scored two or three rushing touchdowns in overtime.

May have come down to a vote by AD's like the Big 10 had with Ohio State and Michigan in 1973. But that was an anomaly.

If Bama had been voted to win the west over LSU, Tiger Rant would have had the most epic meltdown in internet history. Glorious it would have been.

Arkansas was a 9-4 team that year and UK went 4-8. Yes, I'd say the best team won.

There should never be a tie in any sport.

SDS included one of my highlight videos in the article.

I actually agree with the author's point right here:

quote:
Remember how critics said LSU and Alabama meeting again in the championship had rendered the Tigers’ 9-6 overtime victory against the Crimson Tide meaningless?

It was.

But if that game instead finishes in a 6-6 tie, then the championship game is the war to settle the score. The regular season meeting becomes not a boring game but a hard fought defensive struggle that proved Alabama and LSU truly were the two best teams of the season.

Even when Alabama wins the title game rematch 21-0, the circumstances are remembered for the ages.

Only flaw in that argument is deciding who plays in the SECCG. Both teams would have identical records, so it would end up with scenario F:

quote:

F. Record vs. common non-divisional team with the best overall: Conference (divisional and non-divisional) record and proceeding through other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division.

Basically, Alabama and LSU both played Tennessee and Florida that year. Alabama played Vandy, and LSU played Kentucky.

Both Kentucky and Vandy finished with identical 2-6 records. Vandy beat Kentucky during the regular season, so Alabama's SECE foes would trump LSU's SECE foes.

So, literally, in a world without OT, Alabama goes to the SECCG because Vandy beat Kentucky.

So it will be Sudden Death like the NFL?

I think they should do away with OT except for bowl games (maybe)and playoffs.

Some posters raised the question of settling conference and division championships - you just have to account for ties in the tie-breaking system.

If you have to have OT, I would use sudden-death so it doesn't drag on forever.

The one thing I would change (in line with one of his issues) is the accumulation of OT scores. Every time an OT period still ends in a tie, I would just wipe those points off and go back to the original 4Q score. Let the final score reflect the difference in points scored in OT. If the first team scores a field goal, and the second scores a touchdown, then the winning team's final score is 4Q+3, and the losing stays at their 4Q score.

I like this idea. Although I'd do it like in soccer when they have cup games and it goes to PK's. Keep the final score as a tie, but in parentheses have the OT score.

So it would be like:

Arkansas defeats Ole Miss 45-45 (8-7) in OT.

Speaking of ties, LSU has a good few on their overall record. A lot more than some other teams. frick ties.

Keep overtime the way it is, but eliminate extra points and field goals from overtime. That way who goes first or second has no advantage. It would tremendously shorten overtime because in all likelihood it would only go one round.

Starting it at the 25 is the only lame thing, takes defense out of the game, since the other team starts in FG range automatically.

This sadly won't change and is purposeful, they are trying to get the game over with.

It seems silly to me that all O/U bets are almost always screwed once you hit OT, and the final score usually does not reflect how the game really played out.

It seems silly to me that you think anyone making the college football rules gives a shite about fricking up over/under bets.

I love college overtime, but it does need to be tweaked. Push teams back to the 35-40, and make them earn a first down before being in field goal range or seal a victory.

Epic overtime games?

Auburn-georgia 96
Miami-ohio state fiesta bowl
Bama-ut 03
Lsu-arky 07
Just a few that come to mind. Lsu bama was hardly epic.

I agree with these statements; I feel you should have to make at least a first down before you have a decent chance at kicking a FG.

I agree as presently it places too much emphasis on one aspect of ST.
You're already altering game taking away KOs/returns, so might as well at least negate all ST play, or include it and use sudden death.
