SDS - Call to end OT in college football

SDS Opinion Piece
Personally, I disagree with the concept. I mean, what games went into OT that were epic? 2011 Alabama vs LSU comes to mind. If that game ends in a tie, who represents the SEC West? (Yes, the game went into OT).
4th and 25 doesn't happen (Sorry OM fans, you still don't make the SECCG though)
Thoughts? Is OT too much, just right? Should it be reserved for championship games?

I think teams should get the ball at the 40 or midfield but other than that no it should not go away. Ties are unamerican

Ties are awful. frick that

Maybe change a bit the way OT is played but I disagree with getting rid of it entirely.

Some decent points presented, and I am not an unequivocal supporter, but I am firmly of the opinion that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
The one thing I would change (in line with one of his issues) is the accumulation of OT scores. Every time an OT period still ends in a tie, I would just wipe those points off and go back to the original 4Q score. Let the final score reflect the difference in points scored in OT. If the first team scores a field goal, and the second scores a touchdown, then the winning team's final score is 4Q+3, and the losing stays at their 4Q score.

An overtime decision in Harvard’s favor would not make the game sweeter for them, and an overtime victory by Yale would seem hollow, far more than the Co-Ivy League championship the Bulldogs shared with the Crimson that year seems.
Here is where this article falls apart.
Yale's winning in overtime would not seem hollow. That is fricking stupid. Anyone who has won a game in overtime knows that it doesn't feel hollow. Co-Championships feel hollow.
Logistically tied create problems
They leave unanswered

So tOSU and Miami would have been Co-National Champions? That has to feel shitty.

frick sds, and their retarded idea.
Not only is cfb ot exciting, but infinitely more so than in professional ball.

This right here.
Although the scoring vs. betting the o/u presented earlier is interesting.

As Coach Buttermaker would say regarding ties:
"Ties are like kissing your step sister".

SDS included one of my highlight videos in the article.
I actually agree with the author's point right here:

Remember how critics said LSU and Alabama meeting again in the championship had rendered the Tigers’ 9-6 overtime victory against the Crimson Tide meaningless?
It was.
But if that game instead finishes in a 6-6 tie, then the championship game is the war to settle the score. The regular season meeting becomes not a boring game but a hard fought defensive struggle that proved Alabama and LSU truly were the two best teams of the season.
Even when Alabama wins the title game rematch 21-0, the circumstances are remembered for the ages.

College Football OT is a joke. Knowing there is OT ahead takes out a lot of strategy in the last few minutes. Look at some of these 4+ OT's. That's garbage not football.
There was an OT contingency plan for the SECCG from 1992-1995. I wish they'd go back to conference title games and bowl games. Now,there'd been a mess in 2011 with LSU and Alabama provided it had ended in a tie. May have come down to a vote by AD's like the Big 10 had with Ohio State and Michigan in 1973. But that was an anomaly.
Some great games ended in ties.

It seems silly to me that all O/U bets are almost always screwed once you hit OT, and the final score usually does not reflect how the game really played out.
Meh, I don't feel bad for losses suffered by someone gambling.

I love college OT, but I might make the teams start at the 35 or the 40 instead instead of the 25. My one complaint is that one defensive play, say a sack, can move you out of field goal range, and then the opposing team essentially enters field goal range without trying. I'd love to see a team go 3 and out, miss a field goal, and the game not be over with a proceeding chip shot field goal.

The NFL has overtime right. They still have a post-regulation coinflip, but then there is a kickoff and an overtime that doesn't automatically set up each team's possession in field goal range.
quote:
One overtime period is played (with each team receiving two time outs), and each team receives one possession to score, unless one of them scores a touchdown or a safety on its first possession. Sudden-death rules apply if both teams have had their initial possession and the game remains tied. If both teams are tied after the 15-minute overtime, the game officially ends in a tie. In post-season overtime, multiple 15-minute overtime periods may be played until a winner is declared.
