Scary thought: Alabama should be significantly better offensively next season

Alabama’s top five rushers this season are all underclassmen. Damien Harris, the leader of the pack, is a sophomore. B.J. Emmons and Joshua Jacobs are both making significant contributions as freshmen.

Roughly 70 percent of the Tide’s total yards have come from freshmen and sophomores this season.

Because he’s so good and because he’s contributed practically from the moment he step foot on campus, it’s easy to forget that Calvin Ridley is a sophomore as well. He’s arguably the most talented receiver in the SEC and he’s got another year before he can even think about the NFL.

Then there’s the guy throwing him the football: Jalen Hurts. The freshman quarterback is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he can do at the position. There are those who would have you believe he’s a Heisman Trophy candidate right now, and he’s barely playing with half the deck. Granted, he’s running the ball lights-out and scoring plenty of touchdowns, but his passing game still leaves a lot to be desired.

With more reps and a growing understanding of the offense, Hurts should improve.

The same could be said for the offensive line as well. All offseason we gushed over the NFL draft prospects of left tackle Cam Robinson, but freshman right tackle Jonah Williams has played better than anyone over the first half of the season. If he slides over to left tackle next year, he and sophomore left guard Lester Cotton could form a formidable duo.

Bama is 15th in total offense and they're going to have pretty much every significant contributor back next year except for Howard and Robinson. We can be looking at one of the best offenses ever in 2017.

I feel like it's possible that November 5th could be a make or break game for hurts career

This. I dont see Kiffin being there another season. From what I understand he had to basically beg to stay on this year because of all of his "extracurricular" activities.

One game in his freshman season is not likely to make or break the next two (more likely three unless his reads and touch get much better) years.

Sarkisian is on staff right now, just not a coach. Kiffin leaves he'll probably get the OC job.

The defense will probably lose a step. Too many seniors and some juniors may go to the NFL. It won't be as easy to reload as usual on that side of the ball.

I have heard they are CC's of each other but you never know until you see it on the field.

DE's, DB's and LB's are loaded. May need a JUCO or two at DT/NG.

Even more interesting considering it's made up...

We're not going to fire a OC like Kiffin, that just helped win a NC, because he gets on twitter too much..

Beg to keep his job..

sure it can ... the quarterback position is a head game more than any other position

it can take a while for a young man to regain confidence if he struggles and things do not pan out for the tide...

on the other hand, if he steps up, on the road, against the best defense he has faced so far in his career, it could have a material impact on his confidence and the SEC could be in trouble for next few years

same might be more applicable for iron bowl, if auburn and bama win out

If there's any part of Hurts' game that I'm not worried about, it's confidence and composure. Regardless of the outcome, he's still going to be a cool fricking customer.

Sark replaces him and runs the same offense. There may be a drop, but not much.

You geniuses were emphatic that he would be a disaster at Alabama. I'll wait and see which future Alabama OC will be the next disaster.

Plus Piersbacher, Bozeman, Cotton, and Williams are all back on the OL. Stewart MAY also be back at WR.

This is a big thing. I mean, the secondary will be loaded with experience, especially if Humphrey were to come back.

But everywhere else?

We lose a lot in the front 7. Da'Ron Payne and Da'Shawn Hand will be the only returning DL, as it stands now, who have played a lot. SDH will be back at ILB with Evans, and Christian Miller has started to play a little more as a 3rd down pass rusher.

The front 7 won't be as epic as it has been the past few years.

Probably high draft picks just from the defense:

Jon Allen - SR
Tim Williams - SR
Reuben Foster - SR
Ryan Anderson - SR
Eddie Jackson - SR
Marlon Humphrey - JR (if he goes early which seems likely)
Dalvin Tomlinson - SR (maybe not high draft pick but should be drafted)

That's a lot of really good players from the defense.
