Would this be allowed? This seems to be the most bizarre glitch in football rules, but for some reason no coach has ever figured this out. Upon googling, it seems that the rule is that the game clock restarts after a delay of game penalty after the official blows his ready whistle. (I'd never been able to figure out what the rule on this subject is.) This would seem to mean that if a team has the ball and the lead at any point in the second half, they can automatically win the game. You could have just a 1 point lead at halftime, and if you receive the opening kickoff you can simply run out 30 minutes by continuously taking delay of game penalties until the game ends. This would never result in a safety because once you get beyond your own 5 they would turn into half the distance to the goalline penalties. The penalties would bring your team infinitely close to your endzone without reaching it.

Pretty sure consecutive penalties stops the clock.

Play clock runs but game clock doesn't after the delay penalty?

Actually there was a rule that delay of game penalty can be denied by the other team....I am pretty sure it still exists, but if an OL false starts the clock is dead and it is my belief that it can be denied also. The clock actually starts on delay of game flag even if its only 1 second.

I think the scenario that the OP suggested would result in fans climbing down to the field and mayhem would result.

Two or more DoG penalties in a row results a unsportsmanlike conduct and the clock stops.

According to this quora answerer in 2012 the NFL passed a rule in 2009 to prevent the scenario I thought of. A third consecutive delay of game in the NFL now triggers an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which stops the clock. The scenario I suggested was possible in the NFL before 2009, and it still might be possible at the college level. Not sure if the NCAA has also changed the rulebook to prevent this. LINK

Granted this is a random answerer on quora so they may have no idea what they're talking about.

Yeah, I found online that that's a new NFL rule. But does the NCAA have that same rule?

One time on NCAA football I was losing by 6 and had the ball on my buddy's 20 yard line with like 25 seconds left and I was trying to pick a play with no time outs left that would win the game and I was letting the clock run some but then I saw the playclock was down to 2 seconds and I couldn't snap the ball and it was 4th down and I got a delay of game and then there was like a 5 second run off after that and I lost the damn game because of that.

3 consecutive delay of game penalties in NCAA online is an automatic loss.

Well that sounds like a good rule. Although I didn't do it on purpose. I was trying to do like Les when he beat Auburn that time while the clock was running down on the last play.

Unfair Acts
ARTICLE 3? The following are unfair acts:
a? A team refuses to play within two minutes after ordered to do so by the referee?
b? A team repeatedly commits fouls for which penalties can be enforced only by halving the distance to its goal line?
c? An obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules occurs during the game (A?R? 4-2-1-II and 9-2-3-I)?
PENALTY—The referee may take any action he considers equitable, which includes directing that the down be repeated, including assessing a 15-yard penalty, awarding a score, or suspending or forfeiting the game [S27].

I guess that answers the question. I wonder when this rule was instituted and if what I suggested was possible in the past.

There is a catch all rule that allows the refz to step in and act if a team is committing unsportsmanlike like acts not otherwise covered in the rules.

This is how the refs decided to award a TD in the game years ago where an Alabama player ran off the bench and tackled a player on the way down the sidelines. The refs had no idea what to do but eventually decided to award Rice a TD since it wasn't covered in the rules.

If a team was pulling some sort of angle shooting bullshite, the refs would step in.
