Kiffin was fired by Saban and according to Byrne wasn’t even considered to be an option. There’s not a single Bama insider, beat writer, or member of the AD - literally nobody with inside information, who ever suggested Kiffin would ever be an option. In fact, they pretty much unanimously agreed that he would never even be contacted about the job.

Oregon's Dan Lanning, who worked as a graduate assistant under Saban at Alabama, made it clear earlier Thursday that he wasn't a candidate despite erroneous reports that he had been spotted in Tuscaloosa.

Lanning and Sark were never going to leave their jobs, I told several Alabama fans this back even before Saban retired and just got a bunch of muh Bama will get who they want.
DeBoer and Norvell were really probably the best available candidates and that's who Byrne targeted.
I think Kiffin is good as well but I can understand why he wasn't an option at Alabama.
