Not with Rolando. He can't stay out of trouble himself, and he can't stay away from other people who cause it.

He needs to get the hell away from everybody he's ever known up there, go somewhere else, and start his life over before he ends up dead.

I don't know man, he is an outstanding player.

Mentioning him behind that group and "on par" with Upshaw in no way diminishes his a ability as a player.

It's just that UA has a legacy of great LBs (Lowe, Jordan, Bennett, Thomas, and so on). I'm of the opinion that a healthy Hightower overshadows Ro in 2009. And, the few others I mentioned played to an ability that equaled or overshadowed Ros.

I love weed as much as anyone. But damn Rolando, don't be a fricking idiot. Best advice I ever got from a dealer, was never smoke and ride. Smoke, then ride.

Being from Decatur and knowing several folks well who went to school with or coached Ro, he is actually an extremely smart person. Made A's in high school and never took a book home. And home for him was staying with other teammates' families who were positive influences on him. His mom has a mental disorder, and father not around nor a good influence. Had one of his coaches tell me before he left for Oakland that the best thing for him was leave Decatur and never come back. Of course we see that didn't happen and the results of it. Never could cut ties with old friends and things in Decatur that kept dragging him back down.

Can't really feel sorry for someone who keeps putting themselves in the worst situation possible to be successful, but it's truly sad to see such an incredible athlete waste their gift when everything and every opportunity was given to him be successful. Major inner demons going on with this young man.

He never made an attempt to distance himself from the thug culture he grew up in.

Kept going back to see him hommies and run the streets. I don't know about his family, but suspect they're part of the problem too.

He's the poster child for players who thrive under Saban, because of his discipline and accountability. But he's gotten paid, and has to do all the work on his own, and his old ways crept back to the forefront. I'm sympathetic, but you have to learn from your mistakes.

It's a damn shame, because he could've been elite. Has the physical ability and X's and O's intelligence. He was known as a film buff in college, and was said to have a similar personally as Saban.

I'm definitely not against weed. I've smoked a lot of weed, in a lot of pubic places. I've even smoked joints while drumming in Mardi Gras parades. But smoking in a car is the quickest way to get busted. It lingers way longer than anyone smoking realizes. You gotta think before you light up. Especially with everything he has on the line.

Rolando was extremely talented, but Derrick Thomas might have been the greatest college LB of all time.

And Derrick Thomas was from Miami.

Lee Roy Jordan? Cornelius Bennett? Those are the other two arguments from the state of Alabama.

All time ... not even close, even in the Saban era he is behind Hightower (his knee injury gave Ro the stage at Bama), Moseley, Ryans, Foster/Anderson.

As a pure Mike LB, I'm not sure it got better than McClain in 2009.

As a pass rusher and putting the fear in an opposing offense? Thomas hands down. In college and the NFL.

But the point was a home grown talent like McClain, he's likely at the top. In a state that seems to churn out LBs in large numbers.

You can't possibly be serious. Rolando was a full year ahead of Donta. He earned Freshman All-America honors before Donta even stepped on campus. He was an All-American and first team All-SEC with Donta fully healthy in 2008. He was defensive player of the year and Butkus Award winner in 2009.

Rolando McClain will forever be remember by one of the greatest linebackers Alabama has ever had.

ETA: and Ryans wasn't even a part of the "Saban era."

I used to know Rolando a little bit and he always seemed like a good guy. He would get very frustrated about trying to decide whether to be married or single. And he had a pretty tough life from what I understand and a lot of people trying to leach off of him. It's a shame though, because he does have so much talent but he just needs to find himself I think.

You think Ryan Anderson overshadowed Rolando McClain and that he was on par with Courtney Upshaw.

That is one of the most absurd statements I've ever read during a serious football discussion.

Rolando once held a gun to a guys head and he treats his fans like shite.

He isn't cut out for a relationship then because he'd probably kill a hoe if she asked him to decide what to eat.

For arguments sake, his playing ability is such that in Dallas he was able to push the DC to move one of the best MLBs (Sean Lee) over to OLB to get both on the field, and that was after his stint in Oakland. He has immense talent but has demons associated with him and mental issues. Comparing him to Aaron Hernandez who is a psychopath is unfair to Ro. He had one hell of a childhood and a history of serious mental illness in his family.

I'm not trying to jump on him b/c he is a former bama player, but is he bipolar? Has he been diagnosed with depression or any other mental illness?

Maybe he has, but chooses not to release that information. Maybe he has these issues and hasn't been diagnosed.

I just think there is more than just a typical tpos situation here.

Didn't know that. Depression, anxieties, etc. can be hereditary.
