The education isn't "free" or much of an education.
How much did they pay for it? And who chooses the university and major again?
quote:
Neither is the food, room, or apparel.
Food:
Meal plans at the cafeteria, plus 3 "fueling stations." Nutrition center is being built as we speak
quote:LINK
Student-athletes currently have access to three fueling stations across campus, which are primarily used for post-workout nutrition or snacks, rather than providing a full meal. The 22,500-square-foot facility will not only provide full meals for the student athletes, but also educate them on nutrition
Housing:
On campus:
Off campus:
quote:LINK
Off-Campus Housing
Student-athletes, who have the approval of their Head Coach to live off campus, are responsible for selecting suitable housing. In this regard, they are encouraged to contact the Residence Life Office to obtain a guide of locations that have been inspected by the University.
When receiving housing as part of an athletic scholarship, student-athletes who live off campus may receive a stipend in-lieu-of on-campus housing. Allowances for off campus room/board differ from on campus values. "Cash-in-lieu" checks are distributed at the first of each month, September through May, and the first of June and July during summer school.
Apparel:
LOL
All of this is on top of their stipend by the way. And the summer jobber program lining up solid jobs for those who want to work. A lot decline. Must not be starving, homeless, or lacking apparel.
Now does a Leonard Fournette or a Jamal Adams deserve to live like millionaires with their talent? Probably, and they are in a matter of weeks.
Now what about a Russel Gage or an Andy Dodd, were they living below the standards of their talent and contributions last year? There are 85 athletes on football scholarship, and a lot more scholarship athletes when you include all sports, like the swimmers and tennis players.

They are getting a free education where a lot of them had not chance to ever do so. They get top of the line facilities to train in. Top of the line coaches and trainers. Unlimited amounts of supliments. A lot of classroom favoritism that your average student won't get. Unlimited amounts of free clothes and gear: In general, an advantage in life to play a sport. They're advertised for free for the NFL.
Now, the multi billion dollar business wouldn't be as big as it is and wouldn't offer all of this to these students if they didn't profit off of it.
Stick to your name calling and political spins but some of us see value in an education. And in some cases it's not really earned. A lot of cases actually. So aside from all the above mentioned and all that I didn't mention, a free diploma at a good school... for playing a sport. Like I said; don't play and see where your life brings you. I think the majority of the NCAA players would rather have what they get than pass it up to people who appreciate it.

What does that have to do with a video game company owning and profiting off your likeness for the rest time? Is it really fair that other people make money off of you, forever, in exchange for 4 years of free tuition?

This.
I went to school on an academic scholarship so any company that wants can use my likeness without compensating me amirite?
Oh wait, that's not how the world works outside of the microcosm of the NCAA and their student athletes.
Let's also remember that while the NCAA (and EA) is profiting off of students, they are not the ones handing out scholarships.

Yes. Very fair tradeoff. And forever? After 4 years it's on to the next one.
It's a part of it all. "Your likeliness" wouldn't be game worthy without the NCAA.

What a terrible argument
How so?
Free college tuition
Free health care
Free food
Free trips around the U.S.
Free shoes
Free college merchandise
Free place to sleep every night
Free books
Free gym membership
Free tutoring
I'd say the life of a college athlete is pretty damn horrible.

You understand the lawsuit started because O'Bannon was like 45 when he realized his nephews were playing as him on the video game, right? That's way post your "it's only for 4 years" argument. The scholarship contracts are very specific about the college owning player likenesses FOREVER.

That's bullshite, it's because they played a sport. The NCAA isn't absolutely necessary. If it were dissolved tomorrow colleges would still be playing all the major sports.

most players leave after 3 or their redshirt anyway

Without financial backing it wouldn't be as big as it is today. Regardless, NCAA or not these players wouldn't even have a likeness without this exposure. If sports wasn't profitable, the schools wouldn't pour the amount of money they put into these kids.
There's a reason the athletic budget given to each individual sport has a direct correlation to how much money they make.

So how do you decide who deserves what? Does the backup free safety for western kentucky get as much as leonard fournette? Is the arbitrary number the folks at the video game manufacturer come up with as each players rating the basis for these players compensation? Also why havent you addressed the fact that these guys could easily just skip school, goto the park and work out a few times a week and enter the draft in a few years. I mean after all, theyre so goddamn talented by themselves and whatever college football team they played for didn't help them get drafted right?

Watch south parks crack baby basketball episode. It is hilarious and as accurate and biting review of the NCAA as you will ever see.

Of course. Most athletes actually didn't have a problem with the game. Just one numbnuts that thought he was going to cash in.
