Remember the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit that cancelled the NCAA Football Video Games?

Here's an interview with one of the chief plaintiffs in the case. Although i'm spiteful he had something to do with halting production of one of my favorite video game series, he does have a lot of good points about compensating student-athletes for participating in their sports. Not sure if you guys feel the same, but see for yourself...

If they don't want to play for free then skip college and go train and advertise yourself...

The case eventually led to deliberations that earned a stipend for college athletes, but still no agreement has been made to bring back the EA Sports NCAA Football series. NCAA Football 14 is starting to get old.

O' Bannon and the rest were right to do this. The NCAA was making serious bank off of them from the video game companies and then would mickey mouse these guys for every dollar they got outside of the paltry stipend they got

This episode of South Park brilliantly summed up how EA Sports and the NCAA treats the players

If it were any of us and someone was making money from our likeness and we weren't receiving royalties we'd look into the legality of it.

The only reason people don't like it is because they enjoyed the games. Personally I don't understand why they can't just make the games and just have random rosters and players.

I'd be down for that, but only if players still had the option to customize rosters and download accurate ones online

Yeah, treated poorly, i mean, in a couple of years we might see flies flying in and out of their mouths while on the bench/sidelines. Better get the fat girl from Archie Bunker to get them sponsors.

Or come up with an agreement with the ncaa to throw each player a couple hundred bucks.

Considering you have 11-12,000 players in the FBS alone and EA eas paying top tier schools about $75,000 and bottom tier schools about $5000 for licensing, then I'd say that's more than generous on an individual player basis

It sucks for us but they were pretty blatant. When LSU has "RB #7" from New Orleans who is rated 99 it's not really a secret who that was. They should have randomized the players but kept the editor and we'd still have the game.

This would work for people that only play by themselves doing dynasties and whatnot. But the problem I have with that idea is that you could never have an online mode worth a damn. Either you have you have to let everybody use whatever roster they import which wouldn't be fair when some 12 yr old kid edits his favorite teams roster to all 99 everything, or you have to use the standard generic roster where everybody is the same which also isn't fun IMO.

Only if we were not being compensated for it. They are. They get $40,000 or more per year in tuition, housing, food, training, stipends. I can't think of many other college students that get that much money while in college. Yes, I realize the colleges/Universities make a whole lot more money than they do...but the company I worked for made an awful lot more money then i did when I worked there. It is called business. You pay one set of athletes you will have to pay them all. College sports would either cease to exist, or fees and tickets would go through the roof.

When ea announced they were ending production of the game, I was friends with a bunch of our football players at the time and they were pissed. They liked to see how ea rated them every year. There's been rumors of other companies trying to make another college game series but nothing has happened. Ea let the license expire so it's up for grabs..

Or throw each player a couple hundred dollars and have the same game we had before
