Reading the comments will go ahead and snub any notion that charleston is better than Savannah. Seems pretty neck and neck now a days and extremely arrogant to think one is better.

Yeah, but you can't take your experience in a major military community full of non-South Carolinians and apply it to the entire state.

Houston is a great city but it damn sure isn't a southern city. I've lived and traveled in every southern metro area in my career and Houston is it's own animal. it ain't southern, it ain't northern and it ain't western. the #1 thing that I can see that would describe Houston is that it's definitely Mexican. do not make a wrong turn off a Houston interstate (which it certainly leads the nation in these) or you will be the only person speaking English.

Dude. Please.

Look, Texas is not Southern. That's a fact. We're just Texas. South Texas is heavily influenced by Mexican culture, but it's a blend. West Texas is heavily influenced by a Southwestern culture, but it, too, is a blend. North Texas, Central Texas, East Texas, and the Hill Country all have their own feel. All of them are blends, and none of them are truly Southern, although we are proud to of the Southern influence that can be found in these various cultures. But none of them can be properly called Yankee.

Ill give you this. I grew up in Alabama but lived in Texas for 3 years, one in north Texas, two in the Texas Panhandle.

Yes, there is a southernish feel in West Texas but like you said it isnt really southern. The people there did not have country accents in the slightest. The accents did favor the midwest.

I have nothing at all against the heartland midwest states and the people in West Texas but only a small portion of East Texas can really be considered "Southern." Thats not a negative thing. I think its good that Texas has its own unique culture.

Gainesville is hardly redneck. Now the areas directly to the West...yeah buddy. Levy County is all you need to know.

Let's do a hillbilly ranking next.

I'll start:

1. UT
2. UK

No fair. Y'all don't have hills. But yeah UT-UK are it but really we're the same people culturally. An odd mix of hillbilly values (and that's a good thing if you know what it really means - ain't no slur to me), the best of the South, and the best of the North (minus the parts of Kentucky with too many Ohioans).

Other than Texas people calling it "the republic" and thinking A&M is nationally revered and such, the cultures blend pretty well. They're not the same, but on the biggest issues, they don't clash, so that is important (football culture, religion, politics, etc.).

You realize that Ochs (the guy responsible for the NYT succeeding a century ago) was from E. TN? There's a strong case to made against us but really it matters a whole lot where in Tennessee you are if you're judging 'southerness.' The East is a mixture - southern but definitely a mixture - and the Upper South as a whole is very different from the Deep South.
