I've been to the Hump a handful of times, first time around 89 or 90 and the last time 5 or 6 years ago. It had its moments in a couple of those games, especially when Gottfriend and Stansbury were both coaching. It was nothing spectacular though.

Well you also have to keep in mind that in the most recent trips you made that wasn't exactly the biggest match-up. If I remember correctly, Stansbury had Gottfried's number his last several years.

If you're talking about schools not named Duke, even the best places to play college basketball aren't going to get up for every game.

If you came to the games during that time frame against Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, and sometimes LSU and Ole Miss you would understand what I am talking about. Still though, some of those games against Alabama were more than "nothing special".

I guess with Rupp I was just expecting an on-campus palace, but got a downtown almost shopping mall atmosphere outside of it. The inside of it was impressive as hell though, so maybe I'm being unfair. It was also the SEC Tourney in the early 90's so I didn't get the full Kentucky home game experience. Need to go back there for a Kentucky game, though my interest in college basketball isn't near what it used to be.

UK and the fans have been agitating for a new Arena for the past several legislative sessions; something along the lines of the Yum Center in Louisville. Rupp is a great atmosphere and is a good place to see a game, if you are in the lower arena or near the bottom of the upper arena at courtside. If you are in the rafters, then you are paying $50.00 and can't see anything without binoculars.

I love that Rupp is downtown and not on campus. I think it drives home the (gumpish) point that the team is really the Commonwealth's and doesn't belong exclusively to the students. Additionally, there are an incredible number of great eating and drinking options downtown these days. And the bars on campus are terrible and the UK student population gets more GDI every year. So I'd rather be downtown.

This...

Game in Rupp vs Top team like UNC or Michigan State and the place is like no other. On a side note, the glory days of any venue is already past as cell phones have greatly affected the atmosphere of all sporting events. texting and selfies is just a different type of person.

anything new on the renovation/replacement front? I know UK and the city had a "falling out" over the summer on the costs of the renovation.

If I recall correctly, one of the games I went to in Starkville was late in the season when Bama and MSU were fighting for the West, so in that regard it was a big game, and that was probably the best atmosphere of all the times I've been there. Pretty sure it was on ESPN and MSU crushed us, but I may be confusing games.

One time I went was a Saturday morning tip, and there was 3" of snow on the ground from Tuscaloosa to Starkville and there was hardly anyone there.

Stegman is getting better. Man the exterior was atrocious when I was in school.

Yeah I remember that one. If it's the one I remember that was the 90's and sealed the west for us.

I was at that game. Seeing as how Starkville's population is only like 22k people outside of the student body population it's hard for people to make that trip when there is a good snow like that. Most people are traveling around 2 hours to get there.

Yeah I don't hold that snow game against y'all. Not sure how we even made it as it snowed the whole way, but my grandfather grew up in Indiana and he wasn't going to miss a basketball game for some silly snow. I seem to remember they only had a couple of concession stands open because workers couldn't even get there.

And I'm not trying to degrade the Hump experience. When it was on, it was on par with all of the other arenas in the SEC I've been to outside of Rupp and Bud Walton.

Right now it's basically in a holding pattern.

And the thing with Rupp is it always been more about the experience vs. amenities. They're going to pack you in like sardines and it's steep enough in the upper arena that if you fall you're not going to hit for a few rows down. It's a lot of fun though.

During the Stansbury years it was a great atmosphere for SEC play. Unfortunately that has really taken a dive after his departure. Hoping the next few years revive our fan base's passion. Regardless of the way it went down in his final years, one thing that is undeniable is something drew you to his teams. Never went to a single game thinking we didn't have a good shot at winning.

I think the expectation to win is a majorly underrated quality surrounding good athletic programs.

It's all about the bonds. The state couldn't/wouldn't finance it last session and the City is really the party pushing the upgrade because the think a more modern facility will attract more conventions/concerts, etc. UK has had some other building project priorities so they didn't really get behind the effort this time. I think ultimately UK wants an on-campus arena while the City will do everything in their power to keep it downtown. This dispute may be what ultimately keeps UK from getting a new arena for a while.

You are probably too young, but in the mid 90's the Hump was awesome. Our teams were awesome.

Interesting. I haven't gotten the sense that UK particularly wanted an on-campus arena. I think they have both an inability to fund it and a dearth of real estate on which to place it. I'd love something where the old Stoll field was though. Walkable to chevy chase bars and restaurants.

The PMAC is alright, nothing special. The outside is hideous but doubt we have plans for any upgrades due to our newish (2010) practice facility that is attached

I think it'd be cool to remodel our old arena, Parker Coliseum.I prefer its look

How old is Coleman? 50+ I'm thinking.

Coleman was built in the early 70's I believe.

They screwed up by "renovating" it 10 or so years ago. It's dated and the renovations didn't really do anything for it. I think we're stuck with it for at least another 10 years. It's a decent atmosphere when it sells out, but it rarely does these days.

Coming down in January for the UK-Bama and it will be my first visit to Coleman. Looking forward to seeing T-Town and Coleman.

It didn't matter how much we got up, I still knew we had a great chance to lose.

Example: Kentucky / Demarcus Cousins year.

The Stansbury Stall(TM) was a mother fricker.
