He hired an unqualified mistress which forced us to fire him and embarrassed our program. Set us back years.
And not only that, he hurt a lot of our players' draft stocks (Tyler Wilson was the biggest) because he cared more about getting laid than he did about the young men on his team.

Petrino was a dick, he taught his kids football, but that man pissed everyone off.

Hog fans loved Petrino. After the Cotton Bowl win over a pretty good Kansas State team, and 21 wins in two years, and having a Top 10 team returning, Hog fans were excited. Then Little Bobby took control.
Petrino was a dick, but seemed to be in total control of the program. The guy is a genius. How he found time to carve out a secret life amazed me.
I don't hate the guy. But, he sure let down a lot of players and fans.

Step up your game. We covered up Lane's drunken wrecking of a university owned vehicle and he had multiple co-eds with him. Y'all can handle one sidepiece! No REC needed.

I don't know how true any of this is, but it's my take. Petrino wasn't completely inept at recruiting. I was keeping up with recruiting pretty closely, and inputting all the info on woopig.net during the Petrino years. Petrino consistently offered highly rated kids all over the country, on both sides of the ball. Generally, within a week or two of the Arkansas offer, came offers from the big boys and we lost out on the overwhelming majority of those kids.
I believe that Petrino loaded the offensive side of the ball with the bulk of the talent he was able to sign, as this was part of his philosophy. Outscoring your opponents is how you win games. For the most part, if you score every time your offense has the ball, you are going to win. All your defense has to do is come up with a fluke stop or two, and Bobs your uncle. This is also the primary reason he struggled against Pro-Style offenses like Alabama and LSU. Both schools play salty defense, and ball control offense.
Petrino will fluke onto some good defense eventually, and will probably win a NC, but for the most part will not field a complete team. Liked him while he was here, and didn't know what a failure of a human being he was.

When half of your recruiting class doesnt have pictures attached to their names you know your class is arse. I feel your pain Arkansas fans

Pro: He could pick apart any defense you put in front of him, outside of a Saban defense.
Cons: He could not recruit well...His tenure's success was because of Mallett transferring in and the state having one of the most successful recruiting classes in its history. Greg Childs, Joe Adams, Tyler Wilson, Jarius Wright, Chris Gragg were all in state kids who happened to be really good. Nutt left him DJ Williams at TE and some pieces on defense. Outside of that, his recruiting was not very good. He also recruiting problems. From 2008-2012, Arkansas signed a total of 26 kids who did not make it to campus, or were kicked off the team due to arrest or breaking team rules.
Just take a look back at the mess that was left to Kragethorpe(sp) at Louisville when he took over for Petrino. Mirror image of our program post Petrino.

As others have said he did have a problem recruiting SEC caliber talent. The Warren 4 and RM were coming to Ark regardless.
He is probably one of the greatest game callers (offensively) that has ever walked a sideline also. He would take his talent and devise a way to pick the defense apart as good as there is in the game.
The one thing about his coaching (to me) is there was no discipline at all. He got borderline talent there and then we had several arrests and the next thing you know that class of 25 we signed were now down to 15.
We also had a large amount of attrition due to grades. Let's face it, nobody ever said you had to be a rocket scientist to play football but one of the requirements is to remain (academically) in school.
These problems in addition to him being a Richard all added up to failure.

The reason they say it was a dumpster fire is because Bert fell flat on his face. Look at his record and where he had us his last 2 year. I'll take that dumpster fire all day long and twice on Sunday. If he has such crappy players, he is even a better coach than we are giving him credit for. The Bert army went from wait till next year to he needs 5 years

Absolutely. He sticks around for a few seasons to keep his Xs and Os rep up and then bails when the shite he recruited/brought in gets to be too much. And effectively leaves a shitshow for the guy on deck. It's also no secret he's a miserable bastard to work with as a coach or a staff. Can't blame Arky fans for hating him.
