It was referred by Auburn since the 30s. The Legislature didn't change the name until 1960.

I believe The football team was referred to as Auburn from the inception.

Your name was API until 1960.
Even our opponents called us Auburn well before the name change.

Official Tulane program from 1948:

Official UGA program from 1954:

So what our 'official' name was prior to 1960 doesn't necessarily reflect what our athletic teams were called back then.

If all collegiate teams had to use only their legally recognized school names, then your opponents in the Egg Bowl would be the Mississippi State University of Agriculture and Applied Science Bulldogs (or MSUAAS for short).

I think there are more bama fans that try to use it in a derogatory sense rather than Auburn fans that have an aversion to the name.

They sell API shirts in all the bookstores..

I imagine that Bama folks use it because they realize that it hits some type of nerve with Auburn fans, and you know how both sides like to pick at each other.

It's actually been called auburn since at least 1918. I have a program from my great grandfather from college night in 1918. A lot of the cheers used then included the name Auburn. Don't see any with API

True for some Auburn fans but not all. API doesn't bother me at all. Nothing wrong with the school's history to me.

Which one of these is the official API mascot? I think y'all prefer "War Eagle" because it's in your song, and you let that eagle fly down the field before each home game.

Auburn "folk"?

I'm a proud owner of an API shirt.

Trying to point out historical accuracy is in no way an "aversion".

For example, note the headline of this article from after the February 1892 game that started the DSOR:

You will note that it does NOT say "The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama Wins" (since this was prior to Auburn being called Alabama Polytechnic Institute).

It says "Auburn".

Nothing "averse" about it, just historical fact.

Because that heading could never be photoshopped or simply copied or imposed on to that photo.

But what does it really matter? So you were API. What of it?

I've never seen an Auburn fan do this in regards to API. You can still buy stuff with that on there from the bookstore for frick's sake.

Now, if we can just get the Bama folks to embrace UAT like the rest of the affiliated schools have: UAH. UAB.
