He already has the athletic complex, right? Actually, it would make more sense to name the field after him and rename the athletic complex after Saban.

agreed, really.

honestly... if Saban -really- wanted to accomplish one last TRUE challenge, it would be to teach himself to fall in love with the school itself. if he did that, it would be pretty obvious to the fans and i think he'd end up with a monument that would dwarf the stadium somehow.

Bryant loved the program.
Updyke is a lunatic.
Saban is not sentimental about the program.

Nothing!

He is a robot. He would be totally lost if it weren't for imposing brutality to his foes and smiting their ruin upon the gridiron.

He really is utterly consumed by winning, and expecting the team to -never- stray from what he says to do.

*edit*

Thank the holy lord god and baby buddha he's our coach.

I have no idea if he's in love with the University of Alabama or not. I doubt anyone but those closest to him do. Thing is, even if he considers the university his one special place in all the world, you'd never get him to say so in so many words. He's simply not a sentimentalist in that regard. He's a no-nonsense sort of person.

Frankly, if he stays another 10 years -- and that's honestly a very real possibility given that he's utterly devoted to his profession and he appears to be in excellent health for his age -- you should just judge him by his actions. Staying for 15 years and giving it your all should be enough to satisfy anybody.

Well worded. You would think though that he'd only GAIN from showing true care towards UA. Oh, and I don't think many Bama fans aren't totally satisfied.. as you said. :)

Keep winning, and you will be god here. But, there are a lot of old schoolers that -do- care about the true loyalty side of things. That's one reason we kept getting Bryant-ites as coaches. People with real UA connections and pedigrees.

Yeah, the good ol' boy network is how we ended up with DuBose, despite the fact that everyone else in the world knew he was a pitiful coaching candidate. That just went to prove how fricking stupid that mentality is.

I, for one, am glad that all those morons who think that pedigree outweighs merit are finally dying off.

definitely agree. big time.

BUT, i'd also be lying if i said the fact that Saban isn't on the record for loving UA in general didn't bother me just a tad.

the best of the best scenario is when they're as good as Saban is AND love the place they're at. it's why the Bear will always be the ultimate coach for Alabama. Saban will be a close second. especially if he sticks around a bit longer and at least matches the NC titles that the Bear got... which seems highly likely.

True, but, in all honesty, Saban isn't much of one for letting sentimentality show. Even if he were to express an abiding sentiment toward the university, only the most ardent fans would take him at his word and outside fans would scoff.

I do know, however, that his known personal financial gifts to the university's scholarship funds have eclipsed any other UA coach, including Bryant. That makes me inclined to believe he (or his wife, at least) has a little something invested in Tuscaloosa.
