Bad arse knew the rules, though. He got on some governoring committee, talked them into trying out the tear away jerseys. Next game, Tide came out with them, the other team cluelessly spent the night with torn jerseys in their hands. Now that was some funny shite.

I wish I could've seen the first game they wore the tear away jerseys. I would probably be laughing my arse off

If you're going to quote me, you should at least quote a post of mine.

Ask the people on ITAT the same question and they'll provide you with more facts than you can handle, proving Bear/Stallings/Saban/Wade/Thomas are/were all cheaters.

Do you believe Bear Bryant (or associated Bama boosters) cheated during his great run in the 60s and 70s?

No. He pushed the limits, but that is what he was supposed to do. Operating within the rules to maximum effect is part of the job.

Second of all, do you know who else is dead? Shug Jordan. The difference is that nobody gave a shite about that dude while he was alive, and nobody cares about him now that he's dead. He's a nobody. Your greatest coach ever is a complete nobody.

You should read up on the man. And realize that there is more to life than coaching sports.

But you're too fricking ignorant to look beyond the color of jersey's a team wears.

GTFO you piece of shite.

I do not approve of him speaking about SJ the way he did, but there are a lot more auburn fans that say the same kinds of things about Coach Bryant. I'm sure that Shug, just like Coach Bryant, was a good man. And anyone that is going to talk shite about men that have been gone for several years and can not defend themselves is just sad

I think he bent several rules to the breaking point. I also think he knew his way around the rules.

also The rulebook was no where near as in depth as it is today,

One of my grandfather's good friends played at Alabama in the late 50s/early 60s for Bear Bryant, and he has told me on numerous occasions that no one was ever paid or treated any differently than anyone else. He does say that if anyone on the team, and even former players, got in any kind of trouble, whether it be legal, personal, or whatever, that you just needed to call Coach Bryant and he would take care of it for you.

I would say that he wasn't a cheater so much as a man who took advantage of his significant influence.

Ray Perkins asked for a suit when he signed, and was told straight away that type of thing didn't happen at Bama. Back in those days, I don't think Bama had any trouble signing who they wanted.

No. But I do believe rules were put into place for how he did things in the day.

I worked at Russell Mills putting numbers on jerseys back when those were still legal. Every starting back had around 100 jerseys in both colors and was an whole order by themselves alone.

I believe that Coach Bryant was clean the last half of his career - he no longer needed to push the rules because people wanted to play for him. During his early career his Texas AM team was put on probation (don't remember the infractions). But as someone has said, the rules were also different as to number of scholarships allowed, etc.

Shug Jordan was the Les Miles back in his day and won a lot of games with calls that looked entrely stupid, but won none the less. Google up Don Fuell [Auburn commit] who played football at Guntersville High School. Cheating was not just recently invented.

I think coach knew of 100 dollar handshakes and may have looked the other way but he was never involved with boosters raising money to pay players to come to Alabama.
