No brainer. Losing a game you could have won is always worse.

But you can't really ask the Bama fans to compare. Unless they are drawing Social Security, they don't really know what it's like to be blown out in an Iron Bowl. The '05 game is probably the only one that even remotely qualifies, and only because we jumped to an early lead and cruised the rest of the way, even though the final margin ended up only 10 points.

If you get blown out, you probably know it's coming before the game even starts. In 2008 and 2012, I knew there was no hope. Both of those AU teams had packed it in for the season. Now 2009 was a different story. I thought we had a chance and should have won the game. It was disheartening.

Games like last year haunt your soul and you never get peace about it. They are the worst way to lose, bar none... as far as the actual -watching- part of the game, especially due to the implications of who won that game.

Yet I'm still inclined to say I would rather lose that way to Auburn, because only a real arse whipping is something you can go away from being super proud of your team and can laugh at the opposing team's fans.

I hate everything about Auburn, and I'd rather have that dagger to the heart than to get our asses beat soundly.

Close losses. I was at the beach the second half of 2012 with no fricks left to give and didn't hurt at all.

Yeah, 2009 was the last painful IB loss I can remember. 2011 and 2012 didn't even feel like a loss. We knew we would lose bad and no fricks were really given in either of those. After AtM hung 70 on us at home in 2012, the IB loss was like whatever.

During the game: an arse beating

Any time other than during the game: a heartbreaker like last year.

Ultimate choice: heartbreaker. It's 2+ hours of good football, and one moment of pure misery and a bad 2-3 days afterwards. But at least my team played with heart and made it competitive.

*edit*

I think that was a much better way for me to word the first post I made.

Well, we are on completely opposite ends. If I don't have anythinginvested in a game, it just simple doesn't hurt.

Didn't have anything invested in the 2012 IB. We were gonna get blown out just like everyone did to us. Just didn't matter.

To my knowledge no ib has ever been a beat down when you didn't already know it was going to be a beat down prior to the game. So the heart breaking loss is worse. 2009 hurt. 2011 and 2012 the hurt had already come and gone before the game started.

2005 was a beatdown that wasn't expected. Bama may have even been favored. We only won by 14 I think but it was a beatdown in every sense of the word.

Roger that. I'm 32 though.. and more often than not Auburn has won in my lifetime. So I am still semi-conditioned to be the underdog with everything to gain, but to retain our mediocre status yet another year if we lost. So to me, the stakes to the IB are always super high, regardless of the way the season has shaped up.

Losing close usually sticks with you longer because you get into the "what if" game. Getting blown out leaves you with more kind of an "oh well" feeling.

In my lifetime it seems when Auburn wins the iron bowl it is usually a close game, whereas Alabama has had quite a few blow out wins. I don't think Auburn has won by more than 10 since well before I was born.

So not really sure how it would feel to get completely blown out in the iron bowl.

Well, AU hasn't put a beatdown on bama like bama has on AU. A terrible bama team hasn't gone up against a great AU team in ages.

So bama has gone into every IB with some sort of fighting chance. AU had zero chance in 2011 and 2012.

You can thank Tubershell for that.

Ah yes. 2001 is a good example. AU was a small favorite in that one. That was embarrassing for sure. While not super painful, I would rank it as second most painful behind 2009 since the 90s.

Some of the ones in the 90s were moderately painful. Losses like 07 and 05 lsu and of course fsu were worse though.

The 1994 was the last truly painful IB loss for AU. That one hurt.

Losing to Can was way worse than last year both for the blatant cheating and because we led 24-0.

I think it depends.

For the fan of the winning team, DURING the game it's better for a blowout, but AFTER the game it's better for the close win. More memories.

For the losing team, it more so depends on how your season was leading up to it. We lost last year, but if we had losses to LSU and A&M already going in? Not as much hurt.

2004, Bama was terrible and Auburn went unbeaten and even though Auburn started off 28-0 in the first quarter, I'm pretty sure Bama only lost by 10.

Wait nvm got 2005;game mixed up.

We barely got beat in 2004 and were ahead 13-6 at the half I think.
