Not sure why you're still digging that hole of yours. Again, this is documented and not by college sources and homer sites but by media both national and local (when the nickname happened). You're basically arguing with well known facts and history. No one's arguing that having a place called the strip is particularly unique but the reason why Cumberland Ave is called that IS unique.

No it's not. You are arguing that it is called "the strip" because students streaked on it in 1974. You should know the history of your city. Heres a damn paper from one of your graduate students on the history of the area It became "the strip" in the 1920s. He even mentions the comparison to other college strips

Sigh. The name wasn't prevalent then just a reference very few ever used that never took. Hell, many who aren't affiliated with the university or very familiar with that area of Knoxville (and I do mean other Knoxville peeps) still call it Cumberland. To say this particular section is the same as elsewhere and called that for the same reasons as elsewhere is to misunderstand things completely.

At any rate, I've explained this a zillion times and so has Shaft. And obviously, you're stuck on thinking your answer is correct. It's not but it also looks like you simply won't entertain any other idea. But I suppose it's a good distraction from the whole party school statement you made which was also incorrect.

So you went from "its the strip because of streaking" to "well yeah other college towns have a similar area called the strip but ours is called that for different reasons" to "well yeah some people called it the strip before the streaking incident but it was REALLY called that after". I gave you definitive proof in the above link that it wasn't called that because of streaking. I'm sorry I burst your bubble but that was obviously some urban legend you heard. No one ever admits they were wrong on the rant.

You must not realize who you are talking to. I admit when I'm wrong on the reg and many on here can tell you that. Hell, I even apologize when I'm an arse for no reason. I'm trying to be polite but not only are you are misrepresenting what I said but you're still wrong.

WVU became #1 after my freshman year

If you think the delta guys run shite at State then no wonder you had a bad. Get you some better company than the boys who just want to get trashed at Ricks or Cowbells then head to late night to try to find a fight.

So when I'm at the Bin on a Friday night before State plays Auburn and I know pretty much everyone at your most popular bar because they are all from the Delta, and I go balls deep in Miss Mississippi that night who also happens to be from the Delta, I'm not experiencing the best Starkville has to offer? Riiiiiiiiight.

I'm also gonna assume you're under 22 and have never lived outside the Deep South in your entire life, so your opinion is a joke to me.

You do realize we've actually won/been listed as #1 party school in the nation more than once by national magazines?

You got a link on that or are we suppose to just eat it up?

I know we were ranked #1 by Princeton Review back in 2002, when I was there.

ETA: #6 in 2001. LSU was #1 in 2001.

I know we got it sometime in the late 90s as well. And wow some posters are salty as hell today, it's not like there's incentive to lie about this shite. I'm in my 30s and too fricking old to care to lie about this.

Am I the only one that thinks bragging about party rankings is stupid and maybe things like employment, average salary, etc are much cooler? Or did everyone else just miss that boat and partying is all that's left?

It's tRant, and coach Fulmer touched the majority of these salty bastards in naughty places.

No, I feel the same way. But it's a discussion about party schools. Just go with it.

Fair enough. A&M is not a party school. It has it's moments but I'd gladly trade it for the overall friendliness pervasive through campus. It's what sold me on the school when I visited.

It's a pretty dumb thing to brag about but tRant. The times we've been ranked #1 our Admin freaked out and did their best to change it and for good reason. Our goal is to become a top 25 public university. We're not there yet but a few depts are and the party rep weighs down the effort we've put into upping our game as an overall institution.

That said, I can say as an insider to academia that uni rankings are largely bunk (the best know how to work it so the raters are pleased and believe me there are many ways to manipulate admissions for a higher score) BUT those ranking matter a great deal to the public at large and that effects a lot of things, including job opportunities.

I've taught students from big public unis, private unis, and Ivy unis and can honestly say there's no difference in terms of raw smarts (Ivy and private uni students tend to have had more access to more classes in HS but the ratio of dumb assess, tweeners and really smart students is pretty even). Where the difference lies is in the connections you can make at an Ivy and some (though not all) private schools with good reps. Those connections matter a lot more than folks realize and they're the main reason I'd advise any HS student who had a choice to go to an Ivy even if the major offered wasn't as good as others. Combine those connections with the reputation and kids are set.

Not salty, just like facts which is what normal people strive for on this board. Also, there's definitely the incentive to lie on this board. On top of all that you basically did lie when you said you know Tenn has been ranked number 1 multiple times by national magazines when you could only think of this one time in the 90s with no source and then the other one you didnt even know about until a fellow vol posted about it after he google searched. Not a big deal and silly subject so no need to argue but still some of us like to weed through to facts other then just taking it for what someone says because thats doesnt help anyone formulate a strong opinion.

^^I hear ya on wanting some evidence and normally would provide all you could handle (I'm a big research nerd). However, it's difficult to find articles that are close to 20 or 15 years old. Party school rankings aren't high on the archive list for magazines. I'm sure there are other rankings but that is the time frame I'm most familiar with and haven't really kept up with this sorta thing since.
