There is a difference between a rub route and and pick play. There is a fine line between them and Clemson exploited the poor officiating and capaitlized.

The only thing I see is where a Alabama defensive player said it was 'somewhat illegal'. I know the patriots and Broncos run them a lot, but that's pro football. But if they can do it in the NFL why not college?

Somebody needs to post some gifs on these plays. I was listening to LSU local guys on ESPN radio today and they were supporting the line of "missed calls" on the last two TD's for Clemson. FTR, these guys hate Bama and were glad to see Bama lose.

I saw the plays and did not see a problem. Also, it was mentioned that on one of the plays, maybe the final one, that the Bama defender grabbed the receiver and pulled him into the other Bama defender. This was from a still pic response from the Clemson media to the missed call question.

In this article, the ref in the NCG describes what officials look for to make pick and targeting calls:

Mike DeFee, national championship game ref, talks picks, targeting
quote:

Clemson's Hunter Renfrow caught the game-winning, 2-yard touchdown pass with one second left. In addition, Mike Williams caught a 4-yard touchdown with 14 minutes left. Both plays were being discussed as potential picks by the offense.

While DeFee is not allowed to talk about specific plays, he revealed to The Dan Patrick Show what officials are looking for in such circumstances.

"Generally speaking, we're looking for an overt act by an offensive receiver against a defensive player," DeFee told Patrick. "But what will negate that act is a defender who will engage the offensive player. If a defensive player engages by putting his arms out, grabbing, shoving, engaging, that will take the action off the offensive player off a pick play."

Meanwhile, while Alabama fans may have been questioning the lack of a pick on those two plays, Clemson supporters may have similar about potential targeting calls.

Crimson Tide linebacker Reuben Foster was called for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter for hitting Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Additionally, Alabama cornerback Tony Brown appeared to catch Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams with a helmet-to-helmet shot.  He wasn't flagged.

Neither drew a targeting call.

"So what we are looking for is contact to the head area with targeting indicators: a launch, a thrust, a strike," said DeFee, who once again can't talk about specific plays.

"... There are many times in games there is what we call incidental contact to the head of a player that is not of a targeting nature. Just because we have helmet-to-helmet contact doesn't mean there's targeting. Basically, it has to be an intentional act with some of the high-risk indicator into the head or neck area. And the player has to be defenseless with the exception of striking with the crown of the helmet."

Because it was used to beat Bama. They have to revise the rule book everytime Saban gets beat. Next year the QBs can't roll out and throw the ball forward. Also only sec refs can officiate playoff games.

They both set out to accomplish the same thing the difference is in the execution and how you sell it.

It's when you run two intersecting routes to create a mesh point between defenders and a WR thus creating space for one WR to get open.

Clemson WR didn't even pretend to run the route they just went and blocked the Bama DBs. It was so blatant the first time and it wasn't called. Bama should have been prepared the second time. That's on Saban especially with two timeouts left.

Clemson exploited Bama's aggressive press coverage.
The Bama DB's engaged and attempted to jam the WR's right at the line of scrimmage.

If they played off the WR's, then the WR would have to seek out the DB and initiate contact further down field.
