And the school refunds to the student any parts of the loan not used on tuition and fees?

Some loans do.

Pell Grants don't. Basically, the gov. just gives a $5k check to the player each year and he spends it on whatever he wants (a new Dodge Charger, new set of rims, etc.)

Yes, any parts not used on tuition, fees, and remaining balances on your student account. If you paid any part of your student account with a credit card prior to disbursment, they will also credit that amount back to the credit card.

Technically, the loan agreement says that you won't use the money for anything not related to school and school-related living expenses. To be honest, I used a portion of one of my loans to go to a bowl game one year and to put new tires on my truck another year. Technically, those weren't strictly school-related expenses and I wasn't supposed to do that.

I don't know what all the scholarships cover besides dorm fees, tuition, and books, but there are a good many other associated costs that any student athlete would have to pay and, therefore, need a student loan to cover: parking fees, activity fees, user fees, and even food (they're limited on how many school-purchased meals they can have), for example.

How fricking stupid is it to be considered doing something shady to get your picture taken? Only the NCAA could make a picture some huge scandal.

Well if a business it benefiting from the players images being associated with the business, it does leave the aura of a quid pro quo going on. I can see why the NCAA would not want it happening.

Not every player qualifies for the grant in whole or partially though.

Perception is reality. That's the world they entered when they signed that letter of intent.

A hell of a lot do though.

"The Register's look into finances revealed that 1,064 football players at the 23 responding schools last year received a combined $4.7 million through Pell Grants, a federally funded program "that provides need-based grants to low-income students," according to the U.S. Department of Education.
That's an average of $4,442 per recipient beyond his full athletic scholarship, which includes tuition, room and board, and books."

23 responding schools
85 on scholarship at each
= 1955 total scholarshiped football players (of those interviewed)

1064 of those received Pell Grants in some form.

So, of the 23 schools interviewed, 1064/1955 = 54.4% of the players received Pell grants on top of their school's scholarship. And they averaged receiving $4400 per year!

Hell, I don't even "follow" college or (especially) high school players on Twitter because I think it's flippin' creepy

Totally agree. I remember being in college and seeing the creepy old guys who were "alumni" hanging out at fraternity parties and I'd wonder why they were still hanging out in college. They were probably only like 27 but they seemed like they were like 60.

I don't think the twitter phenomenon of grown strangers following college recruits is all that different.

Then there are things like Stafford loans and all sorts of other loans that people can get. The only people I ever knew that were denied student loans were people whose parents made too much money.

The same guy - stagman - posted a thread about it over there, too.

The whole way it unraveled is underrated, especially when you factor in yesterday's interaction. I was laughing pretty hard when I found out it was the same person. I wonder who he will come back as next.

They don't even realize they are all cut from the exact same cloth. You could take a sample post from each group of nuts, switch out Alabama and Auburn, $atan and $cam, and it would be the exact same post.

Indeed, I didn't mind the allin persona that much, he wasn't that bad and if they are going to allow the worse posters from all bases to remain he should have. However the MGM persona I had a disdain for. And by my thread on the help board wanted him as a sacrificial lamb to make the board better. I just wish they would ban some more all around.

I find it funny people have to resort to alters personally.

Oh and nbamalum has had an ongoing interaction with both of his personas for quite some time now. I was working in the yard and was thinking he would get a kick out of it. Then check my phone and he just posted.

How does a sane person have that many distinct personas? Plus, the guy obviously posts on other boards. You'd really have to have some kind of personality disorder to keep them all straight.
