Just like Cal's basketball players are the bastion of academic excellence. I'm sure when you know that you aren't going to graduate and you are 6 months from a huge paycheck that you check out of the classroom. Hell I would.

Wow, they need to get that young man into an Auburn sociology program ASAP.

I am joking

It is still very weird for them to answer that question honestly. Yeah he is a stud football player but total shite in the classroom, and lol if you think he cares about the community. Probably best you don't honor him.

Who does that?

reminds me of pre honey badger blow up. Oh we are going to give him a rest and he isn't going to media day. Nothing to see here just working on a few things.

Well he hasn't had to shame anybody publicly to get them to take enough classes to prevent the APR hit.

Thank you for the clear and concise rebuttal.

I'm not trying to start a bunch of shite, nor am I wasting my time researching anything. I was reading a national article and came across the piece on Nkemdiche. Nothing more, nothing less.

However, please tell me the last time you read or heard about a projected 1st round pick being thrown under the bus by their school in October? It is certainly noteworthy.

Hell, Clowney was a mess his junior year, but their were never any indications that it got to this level.

I think most likely this is part of the culture change they have been pushing down there. By the end of the Nutt era the academics of our team were a disaster. Honestly, when I was in school there were players who could barely read out loud. There is much more emphasis on academics than there was. Not trying to act like we are Vandy or anything but it is taken more seriously than it was.

Nothing to see here, y'all. He is probably just doing enough to stay eligible, like many other football players in the SEC.

Ole Miss says Nkemdiche doesn't meet academic standards for Lott Trophy by slackster
Not completely surprising. We used to live in the Grayson area and it was a not so well kept secret that he was reading on about a 4th grade level when he graduated high school. He was a football player, and a damn good one, and that was all that seemed to matter.

The principal got removed a year or two later for putting too much emphasis on athletics and not enough on academic (school had fallen to one of the worst in the county academically). New principal came in, took down all of the big sports photos and signs about state championships, cracked down on athletes actually go to class and performing well. Scores have come back up and now they are in the top 25% of the county high schools again.

I suspect that Ole Miss is trying to eliminate the possibility of an embarrassing situation for the institution if he was a finalist. The media would be all over the kid's life on campus and expose the character flaws. I suspect that he would make it to the final ballot if not otherwise withdrawn from consideration by the university.

No, it's very strange for a school to do this. Most would stand up for their players (or just BS them and talk about struggles and tutoring and shite) when up for an award

Additionally, do you know how hard it is to be lacking in community service when you're on the football team at an SEC school? They have so many damn projects and events planned for these players to make appearances and volunteer, yet Nkemdiche appears to be unqualified in that regard.

I should have know I was going to get a bunch of pissy Ole Miss fans in the thread, but this is not some hit piece designed to stir up controversy - this is factual information from your OWN athletic department and sports-information director. Hell, Pat Forde asked Ole Miss for a comment, and they referred him to the email they sent to the Lott officers on the matter. They are not backing down from their statement regarding Nkemdiche.

Maybe he is a TPOS.
Wasn't there pic of him hitting the bong?
Wasn't he in a lawsuit for assaulting some frat boy?
Rumors have swirled about his recruitment.
If he is failing out of school, maybe he's not the best candidate for such an award. It could reflect poorly on Lott Award and Ole Miss, if any of the above were found to be true.

Exactly what I said in my post. Ole Miss is trying to head this off at the pass!

Exactly, especially in October at the quarter-finalist juncture of the award. There is still over a third of a semester to pick up any worrisome grades, and Nkemdiche wasn't exactly a shoe-in for a finalist anyway, so it could have gone away on its own.

For Ole Miss to come out and remove their support on a ballot that goes to media members across the country is anything but a normal occurrence.

ETA: I'm not alleging any major improprieties or wrongdoings on behalf of Ole Miss.

Strange PR move by Ole Miss. They are typically media whores. There is something going on. Every school in America would welcome the chance to have their star athlete win such an award.

I find that really hard to believe. Dude 's dad is a Dr. African parents are pretty tough when it comes to academics.
