Mullen opens up practice facilities to the public on Sunday mornings to the tune of "Shake That" by Eminem playing over the loudspeakers.

The unedited Nate Dogg version at that.

This reminds me of the douches that bitched about our Pregame prayer at Neyland. We basically told them to frick themselves.

As anyone who has read my ramblings elsewhere on this site know, I'm not a religious person, but even this is a stretch.

So long as they are not mandatory, Freeze is doing nothing wrong by having religious services as a part of his program.

EDIT: I wonder how this will sit with the "Hugh Freeze is just faking it for the recruits" crowd at ExtreemDawgz.

Sorry. maybe I wasn't clear.

One argument made is that they are having a religious activity in a football room, so therefore many football players may feel compelled to participate.

Using this argument, if the debate team used that same room to practice in, would the football team feel obligated to join the debate team?

The reasoning some of these "Freedom From" groups use just doesn't make sense....much like my prior post.

I HOPE my line of thinking is clearer now...not saying you would agree with it, just saying THEIR line of thinking doesn't hold water, IMO.

It wouldn't really apply even if the coach forced all players to participate in the debate. The reason is simple - the 1st Amendment rulings regarding religion. You can neither favor a religion nor prohibit the practice of religion.**

The reason the 1st Amend and various rulings on it would apply to OM (and pretty much every university these days) is because it accepts state and federal funding. Public universities typically have more freedom in this regard than K-12 because with K-12 you're dealing with minors who are more vulnerable to coercion even when a school has no intention of coercing anyone, kids can feel far more pressure to attend things than adults. With secular/public universities there's less of that but they still have to abide by the general rule.

So even though the comparison of the debate team might seem similar it's not. When it comes to the various amendments, especially the 1st amendment you have to be very careful with public monies to make sure you're not favoring or forcing views and that you're not prohibiting them either.

**Except certain practices which fall under criminal activity, public safety, and/or child endangerment.

I'm not a religious person at all. All the matter in the universe came from an original source. I think religion is just a way to express this universal concept. I have no problem hearing about religions because most religions are rooted in good stuff they have just been infiltrated by bad people over the years.

As long as Freeze isn't up there thumping a bible trying to convert the non believers then I don't really see an issue. Most of his biblical stuff is about inspiration not eternal damnation.

This is why the South hates the North. We don't fricking go to NYC and start telling people why they are living their lives wrong.

I'm torn on this one as I despise being led to the cross by evangelicals, but also can't stand the need for everyone to put their nose in everyone else's business. No matter what you say there is pressure on the players who are working for playing time to conform. I admire the conviction of Freeze and his views on religion it's just more a private issue with me and should be a personal choice.

They tend to be more of the "that Mullen guy is a Scientologist" to recruits parents by Nutt. Or Rev Freeze telling Richie Brown in front of his parents "I am concerned for your soul if you sign with State". We have played the Bible card in Mississippi way before "Fambly", "All In" and Cam Knewton.

Apparently these neckbeards tried to get the Star of David removed from a Holocaust memorial.
