Rush. You live in Mississippi there is nothing better to do and it's a safe place to get fucjed up. I would not trade my fraternity experiences for anything.

Can't speak about Greek life at Ole Miss in particular, but you should do what you feel comfortable with. I never thought about rush previous to college and I ended up rushing at a small school where the Greek life dominated the social scene.
I enjoyed it and actually got a lot out of it (how to work with nimrods can be useful later in life). That being said, do what you feel most comfortable with.
It's my experience that a larger school still offers decent social outlets outside of Greek life. It really depends on the individual and their environment.

If you are so uninteresting that being in a frat is the only way you can make friends or smash hoes then you will be in a life full of shite if you don't pledge. So go right ahead, you need them

Since you know nothing about rush you obviously aren't being rushed by anyone, which means you'll end up at a middle or low tier frat. You can still have fun, make connections, and meet good people but it's just not the same as being in an elite frat so it may not be as worth it

I always find it ironic that the anti-Greek people are just as douchey as Greeks. There are shitty people in any group.
That said, rush. You'll have fun whether you decide to be a GDI or go through with pledging.

Is the social life dominated by greek life as much as people say? Right now I plan on rushing, but will I feel left out if I don't? Also, anybody want to explain how the whole rush thing works because I have no idea.
If you don't go Greek, you'll be fine. A majority of Ole Miss students are not Greek.\
ETA: I'm not saying "don't do it," I'm just saying that you shouldn't feel like you have to.

I was a Kappa Sig in school, it was fun as hell. It's not the end all be all, but it sure helps until you turn 21. Also, Halloween mixers FTW.

Typical geed. If you suck at making friends, frats will help you. If you're king dingaling and have no trouble making friends, frats will help you make more. Whether you "need" a frat or not, they will help you make more friends and connections than not being in one.

This. But whether you pledge or not, go through rush. Nothing wrong with getting your dick sucked and free drinks for a couple months. One of the number of reasons why OM is better than State. Rush is almost three months instead of two weeks

tagging on to what some of the others have said, being in a fraternity seems to matter most your first year. As you might imagine, it is the probably the quickest and best method for meeting people, getting laid, etc., but after your sophomore year, active greek life participation will almost certainly not be a priority for you.
Also, one of the first things that will be pounded into your head (and I mean literally) is never refer to the fraternity as a 'FRAT'.
Good luck to you.
Hotty Toddy!
