I think they should be allowed to play it. I'll leave it at that.

It's a beautiful piece of music. It needs to never go away IMO, if people want to get offended by it they can get the frick over it. A thousand things far more offensive go on at every SEC game every week.

but the numbskulls yelling TSWRA absolutely ruined it for everybody.
Let's be honest though: A 20 year old yelling "The south will rise again" at a football game in 2013 doesn't have a racial motivation behind what they are saying. The only thing that annoys me more than the people who do it are the people who insist there are 60,000 people in Oxnard, Mississippi every Saturday who want to bring slavery back because some kids yelled "TSWRA".

Every school in the SEC west has great band music except Auburn.

It is hard to pick which one is the best.

Awesome post... Not sure I could put it better than that.
I fell in love with FDWL the first time I heard it. Its a BEAUTIFUL piece of music. People who get offended are just people who are looking for something to be offended by. Its sad.
That being said.. I really doubt it comes back this year BUT I hope like hell that I'm wrong. The piece they play now is okay and I enjoy it but its just not the same.

That's a very shortsighted and insensitive opinion. Just because YOU find nothing offensive does not mean that anyone who DOES is "just looking for something to be offended by."
It seems like many white people want black people to look past the initial reaction and what it means to THEM to see the South that is to be appreciated and valued. Fair enough. But you also have to be willing to look past YOUR assumptions of what it means and accept why it stirs negative emotions in others.
Until that happens in both directions, we will continue to see all symbols of the Old South fade away until there is nothing left.
