Didn't the SoCon conference move their baseball tourny from Coastal Carolina's park to somewhere in North Carolina for basically the same thing?
I remember hearing they were going to move it but decided not to. According to the wiki page a SoCon tournament hasn't not been held in SC since 1989.

What's the consensus on Frank Martin's coaching this season? Is he doing better than expected? I'm not sure how good Carolina was supposed to be coming into this season.

That shite pisses me off so fricking much. If Obama and Oprah can hold a rally in the CLA, we should be able to have fricking NCAA games there. Didn't the SoCon conference move their baseball tourny from Coastal Carolina's park to somewhere in North Carolina for basically the same thing?
The SoCon baseball tournament I thought had been in Greenville at some point recently. I thought the basketball tourny was at Greenville as well but maybe moved to Asheville NC.

Well considering we have like 2 SEC caliber playas, I would say he is doing a fantastic job!

I agree.. He's the best coach with a 3-10 conference record in the history of the SEC

We had a lot of talent transfer the past 2 years. He had to totally rebuild around Ellington.
The majority of Gamecock Nation gave him a pass on this season. When we started winning early, there was some hope, then we lost some close games, and we were just happy to be in the game for those. Then there were blowouts, and that was unexpected. However, this was a good win, hopefully the team can build on it.
Martin's already won more games than we did last year. Whatever we do for the rest of the season, technically it's an improvement from last year.
When he gets more of his players here in the system, I think the results will be even better.

Yes. Literally 4 players that could be on this team (OM's Galloway included) transferred in the last 2 years. All 4 of them would be starters on this team.

So USCe finally delivers.

Martin will have you guys in the NCAA tourney sooner than later.. i didn't expect OM to make the Dance after the way we've been playing down the stretch but this team has pretty much quit... Hopefully AK's baggage keeps him from getting another decent coaching job ever again.. frick that guy

2 SEC caliber playas
That being said, Frank Martin isn't the reason why USCe won tonight. It was Andy Kennedy

Didn't the rally have so many RSVPs they moved it to Williams Brice?

We had one. And many a Gamecock fans miss it. It's known as the Carolina Coliseum. It was built for basketball and you can tell. Fans are right on top of the court. It may fit 6,000 less than the CLA but it could get just as loud, if not louder (granted the CLA has rarely been loud given how bad our basketball team has been since we built it)
My theory: We hired a Lou Holtz in basketball (Odom) during this time, expecting us to take a leap...and we had decent success under Odom (back-to-back NIT championships, comparable to Holtz's back-to-back Outback wins vs. Ohio St) and everything seemed in place to propel us to the next level.
The difference is, we hired Darrin Horn and not a Steve Spurrier.

Thats all I was getting at, it was not an attack on USC basketball, Colonial Life Arena, or the city of Columbia. I remember hearing stories about the environment in Carolina Coliseum under McGuire and Fogler. Maybe it would not be an issue if the team had the success it has had in other points in its history. Hind sight is 20/20 maybe in a few years once FM turns things around it will be a non issue.
Either way good game tonight.
I feel that if we're able to get our BB program to a point of consistently winning seasons and even the occasional NCAA appearance, the attendance at CLA will be among the best in the SEC. I always have felt that the student body could be situated better to give them more of a closer impact to court, but before we get to that issue we need to simply get the program better and winning more games...
An example would be the 2003/04 season under Odom: went 23-11 and 8-8 in conference, and made the NCAA. Went 14-3 in the CLA. Averaged 17,088 per conference game that season, with a total capacity being 18,000, so we averaged 95% sell-out for every SEC home game.
The 2008/09 season and 1st under Darrin Horn, we surprised some and went 21-10 and 10-6 in SEC. After going 14-18 the previous season the expectations weren't very high under a new and somewhat unproven HC. We averaged 15048 ( 84% capacity) in CLA in the 8 home SEC games, including 2 sell-outs vs. UGA and UT. We went 7-1 at home in SEC games. The final 4 games, when it was apparent that a special season was developing and we were in contention for the NCAAs, we had those 2 sell-outs and averaged 17,136.
The next season (2009/10) when expectations were higher pre-season (we would only go 15-16, 6-10 in an injury-plagued season), we averaged 13,828 per home SEC game, including a sell-out vs. UK.
In the better seasons we typically average around the top 25 nationally in home game attendance. But we've never had a team that was consistently a 20+ game-win team that was ranked in the top 25 and often participating in the NCAAs, so our fanbase hasn't been given the best opportunities to show how much it supports college basketball...

There's been 2-3 games this season where our opponents won because of USC screwing it up in the end, so I guess we were due for at least one...
