Before I opened this thread I wanted to see if Miles was last or second to last.

your ranking of miles, makes coaches seem overrated

Rank them according to who you would most want your school to give a new 5 year contract to.

Sumlin (started with a splash, has declined each year)- you want him to do something more, not less, each year.

This is such stupid logic. So if Coach "XXXX" wins a national title in year 1 and then only 12 wins the next year and 11 after that, he's a bad coach because he is declining each year?

But the coach who goes 2-10, 3-9 and then 6-7 is a real up and comer!!
not sure what you're so upset about. Each school is different; each coach is in a different spot.

Sumlin initially looked good, although it was a little skewed... the only good team Manziel beat was Alabama in year 1. LSU and Florida held his team in check. A&M then got excited and said "see what we can do" and threw the bank at the program... and he's backsliding. The Aggies never caught LSU, while a close Bama win became a close loss, became a stomping. We're now 3 years in, and it looks like he might have peaked early with the element of surprise; with the contract he has, I'd want a return to at least 10 wins before I'd give him a long extension.

Looking at Arkansas and Tennessee, what you absolutely need is someone competent building the program from the ground up. Bert and Butch look to be competent, so you give them time... and if in 5 yrs they've peaked at 8 wins, at least you have a foundation.

I'd wait on McElwain at Florida, because you want to know if the Gator collapse was Muschamp over his head, or a psycho AD and boosters tearing the program apart to try to keep pace with Bama (which would explain why Urban, an elite coach, split).

Saban, Miles, Richt, Pinkel and Spurrier have total control and solid programs, as long as they keep interested. I'd say you should give Mullen that too, since winning 8 at Miss St is like winning 11 at LSU. You just can't expect any better.
