So will all UAB fans become hardcore Bama fans?? Might as well since they are apart of the system.

Worth noting especially the timing. Bryant Jr is actually about to roll off the BoT...

Like I said, I really don't know the financial impact of the loss of those two sports, but there has to be some positive effect on the balance sheet. It would be interesting to see an analysis of that as well.
The problem is that football drives revenue and thus drives conference affiliations. Does UAB remain Conference USA in other sports? I'd guess that that is unlikely. So, say goodbye to any basketball money that might have come in. And UAB has some basketball tradition.
I think when it's all said and done, 5 years down the road, this will be a huge net negative for the university.

quote:We see this in Louisiana a lot. You can make a case for La Tech, being in the upper margin of the state. But the others, the ULLs and ULMs, will never be more than a marginal (Sun Belt) level team, while they could have been dominant powers in Div 1AA (or whatever it is now). They had a lot more natural rivalries at the lower level.
A lot of it is due to the poorly conceived yet popular notion that a football program creates an identity for a school (generally a commute school like UAB or Georgia State) that will resonate with students and alums and create a stronger bond with the school. This will in turn churn up more donations to the athletic department and the school in the future as alums will feel more connected to the University. In addition they think that it will give them a new public presence across the country with which to sell their University.
Everyone wants to be Division 1, but you dream of being SEC or B1G, not Sun Belt or MAC.

This is the dumbest topic I have ever seen here. People who have zero clue as to what they are talking about, yapping about shite. I have two degrees from UAB and am still there frequently. Believe me, I understand the plight.
If you guys go to UAB on any given evening, you will see 75% of the cars with Alabama or Auburn stickers on them, and just as many students wearing merchandise from those schools. There is no allegiance there. Never has been, never was going to be. People who don't live here, have zero clue.
Thus the reason it was shut down. No one cared about the program until it was gone. FACT. Anyone saying anything different is a troll or an idiot and trying to make threads bashing Alabama. You are just making a fool of yourself.

If I'm not mistaken, they can't stay in CUSA without a football team. But there are mid-major conferences they could join that do turn nice profits.

You are correct. The President (Watts) hopes they will amend the rules to let UAB stay but most think that will not happen. C-USA did not seem very pleased football was being cancelled.
And I am not sure it this hurts or helps. LOL
