It's the biggest MSU gift ever.

Mississippi State University announced today that it has received a record $100 million gift from alumnus George Bishop and his wife Kathy. The gift is the largest in the university’s history and is also the largest for a college or university in Mississippi, according to the university.

“Mississippi State opened many doors for me and gave me the foundation I needed to be successful. So, when the opportunity arrived for me to be able to give back to the place that’s been so influential for me and many others, it just felt right,” said Bishop in the announcement. “It’s a blessing to help people, and I especially want to help students that have the desire to work but don’t have the funds to accomplish their goals on their own.”

“I’m most proud of the fact that all my success doesn’t really make a difference to me,” added Bishop. “I came from nothing, but you have to believe and know you’re blessed to accomplish great things. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and more so for what’s been done for me along the way.”

Alumnus worth $3 billion. Founded GeoSouthern Energy.

Why do people give rich colleges $100 million dollar gifts? Give it to charities or to build houses for people who need it

The only other school in Texas I can think of who recently got an $100M gift too was Baylor.

The Waltons as a family have given Arkansas 420m in 2 gifts.

A Sam Walton had a plan. He had a store which was making money and had a plan to start stores all over Arkansas and the southeast.
High volume low cost.
He needed $1m dollars to get it off the ground. So he goes to his bank and talks to the chief loan officer about what he needs and why. He was refused the loan. President said it wouldn’t work and that he,Sam, would go broke. Sam thanked him and got the money some where else. The rest is history.

Actually, they can do with their money as they please.
Giving it to a college that can theoretically help people who need it get an education and thus make a better living for themselves is helping people in need.

Overall, the foundation has contributed more than $260 million to institutions in the University of Texas System."

"The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation is donating $100 million to UT Austin to support students from lower-income families. The money, which will be granted over 10 years, is the largest donation the university has ever received that will go directly to students."

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

Congrats to MSU!

I came from nothing..., I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and more so for what’s been done for me along the way.

Success = Working hard + a helping hand.

Nice to see someone giving back in a meaningful way.

They’ve actually given quite a bit more than the 2 gifts listed. Bud Walton Arena as one example.
