Unions have worked so well in the Midwest that the descendants of the original dumbasses want to kill football too.

Would I be afforded any of these "protections"?

Nope, if you aren't paying dues or scheduled to pay dues (like you just joined in the past couple days/weeks) then you aren't covered in the CBA.

CAPA's founder and president is Ramogi Huma, a former University of California-Los Angeles football player who previously founded the National College Players Association (NCPA) to advocate for college athletes.

The NCPA backed a first-of-its-kind law in California that required colleges in the state who get more than $10 million annually in sports media revenue to pay for athletes' sports-related medical care, among other student protections

CAPA's priorities will be to secure similar coverage for current and former college athletes' sports-related medical expenses, minimizing the risk of sports-related traumatic brain injury and improving graduation rates, according to the group.

One thing about this "union" is that walk on/non scholarship players wouldn't be allowed to join

I'm not sure if that's true. I would think you could still join because walk-ons can still count on the roster. The university just can't have more than 85 on scholarship.

Maybe, but a university isn't going to pay a walk on, unless they are treated like practice squad players, which I'm sure the Union will push for, b/c they just want more people and more dues.

I would imagine that all of that would be taxable compensation since the union would make them employees.

That... and the Schools would quantify the value of the coaching/training/health services the students receive as well. How much is a year of Saban Football Training Camp worth?

However, and I'm really curious about this, how would the NCAA react if these players do form an union? The NCAA isn't a government organization, so I'm not sure they have to even recognize the union. Could they just declare the entire team ineligible?

The negotiations are going to have to be done at the school level, but then the schools would also have a coalition of schools, so they could all confirm what they are willing to give or not give during negotiations. It would be a really bad thing for one school say to the union during their negotiation session, "We'll give all Dean's List Athletes 10% bonuses, and another 10% bonus for finishing in the Final AP Top 10," if none of the other schools were set on doing that. It could create an unwanted precedent.

So you're suggesting they would leave the NCAA to form a new organization? Or am I misreading that?

"This union-backed attempt to turn student-athletes into employees undermines the purpose of college: an education," NCAA Chief Legal Officer Donald Remy said. "Student-athletes are not employees, and their participation in college sports is voluntary. We stand for all student-athletes, not just those the unions want to professionalize.

"Many student athletes are provided scholarships and many other benefits for their participation. There is no employment relationship between the NCAA, its affiliated institutions or student-athletes.

"Student-athletes are not employees within any definition of the National Labor Relations Act or the Fair Labor Standards Act. We are confident the National Labor Relations Board will find in our favor, as there is no right to organize student-athletes."

NCAA is all about the student athlete and amateur sports, now where is my billion dollars... are there a bigger bunch of hypocrites than the NCAA?

Ultimately and most importantly, Unions really have NO autonomous power, they are only given the power that management gives them and that they get signed into a CBA.
Therefore, the NCAA, SEC and every University can go to the Business Agent for the player union and say, "get off my fricking lawn," and there's nothing the union can do besides picket, file bullshite claims of unfair treatment with the NLRB, or even encourage their members to go on strike.

Really though, what's going to happen if a college team goes on strike like Grambling did this past year?

The school admins may have to forfeit a game, but all those scholarships are only renewable every year, so those players are gone!

Also, a lot of schools won't be able to afford to do the new pay for play college league. The schools like clem5on who have to take a state subsidy inorder to remain profitable won't be able to compete....wait a damn second here....
