This sounds interesting. You can't argue with players wanting better protection from concussions. Keeping their scholarships in case of injury is also a good idea. With the NCAA and schools raking in the dough, it's time to protect the players as they are the source of all that money coming in.

Will this help recruiting at Northwestern? If recruits see advantages like guaranteed scholarships extended medical care and a pool of money to draw from post graduate. If they are successful will the NCAA be forced to include all schools for fairness.
From the article:
"Having already successfully advocated for the creation of multi-year scholarships, it now would like those scholarships to be guaranteed even if a player is no longer able to continue for injury or medical reasons. The group has also called for a trust fund that players could tap into after their NCAA eligibility expires to finish schooling or be rewarded for finishing schooling."

Finally being in the SEC is rubbing off on MIZZOU.

Not true. On our team we all had summer jobs an some of us worked at night during the offseason
That doesn't include the big off campus check the scholarship players would get if they lived off campus. What they would do was split a rental house or apartment 4 ways and pocket the rest of the cash.

I am all for this. The school I played for honored all scholarships and never pulled them for all sports.
We had lots of guys have to retire from concussions, injuries, etc. and we still honored their scholarships.
I think its really shady when schools do not honor scholarships of injured players.

I am 64. There was time when going on a date I could buy gas for the car, go to movie, get a pizza, etc... for under $20, maybe even under $15
Try it now.

ETA: Will the collective bargain for practice schedules and playing time?
I have quite a bit of experience with unions, but on the other side of the table. So understand my point of view may be skewed more towards the truth and facts.
Union Facts (myth busting time):
1. Unions are ALL FOR PROFIT, there is no such thing as a non-profit union.
2. Unions exist b/c employees are forced to pay dues.
3. Unions only need a majority vote from a job/team/position to get into the place, but they need a 100% vote to be removed from a place. (i.e. 51 out of 100 people say "we want a union," the union is in and valid. 99 out of 100 people say, "we don't want a union anymore," too bad, union is still active. It takes a 100% vote to vote out a union from an existing job code.
4. As far as what you were saying with the collective bargain...the union can promise anything and everything under the sun to get people to sign up for the cards/representation. They could tell these college athletes that they're going to get them $400K a year each and an NFL level benefits package. The union doesn't have to deliver on a single one of those promises and if you signed the cards, you're still in the union, as along as they keep at least 1 person committed from that job code.

I hope it is the end, it has been unfair and it is no wonder all the crap goes on under the table, what damn choice do they have. Try to remember what it was like for you to take someone on a date and pay for it. What do these guys do now, how do they drive somewhere if they do not come with money and most don't.
I wish them well.
They could do all that without a union. They don't need a union to force that issue. Unions are self-serving/for profit institutions.

What I'm waiting for, IF this were to go through, is the Booster Arms Race.
If a University and the Fed Govt recognize a college athlete as a paid employee (professional) then couldn't I do the same as a private citizen/booster?
What's going to stop me from saying/acting upon, "USC RB Mike Davis is awesome, I'd pay $50,000 for him to come to my business and just hang out for a day as an appearance fee."
Then we'll really see who the "haves and the have nots are," amirite? NSD Signing Day Bonuses will come from wealthy boosters in the form of gifts/payments for appearances/etc....

I hate fricking yankees. No doubt the mizzerites are meeting in the chow hall right about now listening to some migrant cabbage cutter explain to them why they need the mizzerites to break through in the SEC.

And they are already compensated for their "work" to the tune of about 6 figures worth of education, housing, meals, etc.
