He doesn't need to be tall. He can stand on his rings if he needs to reach the top shelf.

I agree that he may not be the best game planner but he is the best recruiter. The only coach in the SEC in his time that could even come close to his results is Urban Meyer and maybe Spurrier if he still had the fire. Some of the newer head coaches could be good but we don't know yet.

He is more than a recruiter. Much more. He is the best defensive mind in college football and there is nobody as detailed or organized as he is. Our ball boys are recruited and put through training.

Not special just very smart enough to put himself in a key position in one of the most profitable forms of entertainment to date. He is just an actor on this stage. There are producers and directors who are much smarter than he.

If what he does is so easy, why haven't other schools emulated him? It's not like Bama has more money then everybody else and pretty much everybody in the conference is willing to throw whatever they have at the program to make it successful.

It's a hell of a twist proving how good we are because of our less heralded recruits.

These boards sometimes get curiouser and curiouser.

Very good. That is a start. Keep digging and you will have the answer to that question.

If he was taller he'd win 'em all.

You sound as though you know him personally. How can you possibly say that he is the best defensive mind in the entire college football system. Do you know what every other coach in college football's defensive stats are?

He is a doing what the best coach is supposed to do at the best program. When you get someone who is the best at their profession and they work for an organization that is at the peak of the industry you usually will get domination.

He is in the conversation for greatest of all-time, but Alabama is the undisputed greatest of all-time programs. Some people like Spurrier will try to use that against him.

That's why it was important that not only he win big at Bama, but win in dominating way that had never been achieved prior.

His prior success at LSU will also help bolster his resume for those who try to use Bama against him.

This is the exact argument people make against Coach Cal.

To be fair, Saban is a more complete coach than Cal, and I say that as someone who watched him for several years at Memphis. Cal was ok with good talent, but didn't win big until he could really stack his teams. He had that one great season at UMASS with Camby and a bunch of nobodys, but Camby was a pretty damn good player. Other than that one season, he's had to have a blue chip roster to post those great seasons.

I'm not trying to say Cal is a bad or average coach. Recruiting and player development are a huge part of what a hoops coach does, and he is one of the, if not the best in those departments. However, while he isn't a bad X and O guy, he isn't on the same planet as Saban in that regard. Not even remotely, which is why his "good" Memphis and UMASS teams regularly got bounced hard in the 2nd round before he got hooked up with World Wide Wes.

recruiting ... 10/10

preparation during week/off season ... 10/10
the most underrated skill he has ... the "process" isn't some gimmicky slogan ... practice your best to play your best ... simple as that and not all that difficult to emulate ... his offensive philosophy is to be balanced or able to run or throw if called for ... stop the run and make the other team one dimensional ... i'm not aware of any coach that has played the run as effectively as saban has ...

in-game tactician ... 8/10 ... weakest on the offensive side of the ball, but that is covered a bit by his philosophy of being able to throw or run depending on the situation ... great tactician on the defensive side ...

over-all ... 9.9/10 ... suck it, college football fans ...

Trade any coach in the SEC for the past 10 years at Bama and they would have a similar record.

This gives me a boner.

When Saban leaves, Alabama will hire a new coach, no? More ships
