New practice facility for Miss. State golf

Those sort of one hole practice facilities have proven to be a waste of time. They're pretty to look at, but unless they adjoin your program's golf course and unless they are far more challenging and flexible than that hole and the chipping and putting greens appear to be, they'll be little more than a gathering place for kids to grab arse.

Looks to me like more an alumni trophy than an actual practice facility.

I suppose the fairway can be played from either direction and perhaps the greens can be approached from either end of the fairway, I dunno. Looks like a lot of water and trees from the opposite end. I see the five greens skirting the fairway, and lots of rough to play out of by not many obstructions.

Have they released a diagram laying-out how the facility is supposed to be approached and played?

Was this, by chance, a piece of donated property handed-over to your Ag School to develop into something and this is what they came-up with?

Wait, is that water to the right or just a pasture or field?

I mean, I'd love to cut 25 acres out of my property and do something like that, it would be great entertainment ... but for pure practice value, it seems like an answer to a question that has not been asked.

Now, if that barn looking structure houses some interactive swing analysis gadgets, I can see where that might come into major play on bad weather days.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty and all - but how far away from your program's club course is it located and again, is there a diagram of how that thing lays-out to be played/practiced?

Actually, I just read the article. I've played Old Waverly before. Sweet course. I've even duck hunted some Corp of Engineer property not far from there at the bridge near the big creek that leads to the lake ... Tibee road off of 25 maybe? I cannot remember if it is 25 or 45 but it's on the way to West Point after you get off the road from Starkville, north of the AF base.

So that picture is not exactly representative of the entire layout. I get it now. It'll be adjacent to Old Waverly. That makes more sense.

Pretty huge deal to have all of this at Old Waverly. It's not your typical school-centric golf course...

What makes it a big deal is now Old Waverly is the home course for Mississippi State, which is arguably the nicest course in the state.


It will help State recruit well enough for them to compete at the highest level in golf.


You would think that Ole Miss would have a good golf team because of the type of crowd our school draws, but it's all about home courses and facilities. The OM golf course is probably the worst home course in the league, and there isn't an elite course within an hour of campus. It's why we suck and will continue to suck.

We just opened up an 11,628-square foot facility right in the middle of our 36 holes.
