I would think that if such a misleading quote got into the public arena, someone in the program would have corrected the mistake so that they don't look like dipshits and/or complete liars when the actual truth came out. Well, maybe you're not that dumb, but good lord you aren't smart.

It's not exactly that simple, because the gas mask pic and the texts being leaked during the draft made it unique in the way it played out in the media. That might cause the NCAA to handle it more seriously than it otherwise would have. The offense itself wasn't really out of the ordinary but the extenuating circumstances of the leak during the draft raise the stakes. Everyone knew something fishy was going on in Oxford and then all that unfolds in realtime in the national spotlight? The punishment will probably be more than a slap on the wrist.
