except it's completely wrong. Every school gives out FULL cost of attendance scholarships in all kinds of disciplines every single year yet they can't do it for athletes?

Exactly. Why can't they help the ones that bring in the bacon in the first place

Would it be much simpler to just give them a stipend than all that mumbo jumbo in the article?

They do. Its based on the cost of living.

For example: Pryor was getting $1,600.00 a month ( he lived off campus) stipend check + meals + books + clothing allowance.

I got $1,000 for being in the marching band. Shouldn't be any more. Any more, and you're kidding yourself. I heard some idiot governor suggest $3650 a month. That's like a full time job!

That's 43,800 a year if paid through 12 months

The issue is there are hardly any universities turning a profit.

I want to say 23 only make a profit. Only 13 make over 100 million in profits.

MOST schools use subsidies to pay for sports. Tax payer money.

LSU, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, OU, PSU, Purdue were the ONLY schools that did not report using subsidy money in 2012.

The SEC spends 160+ thousand PER YEAR PER PLAYER.

Now explain to me WHY they should get more than what they are and from WHERE?

It may never happen. They will be walking a very fine line on this for sure

how many athletic scholarships

Why would you only pay athletic scholarship players? Do the others not have the same requirements, responsibilities?

However, to answer your question...Kennesaw State has 16 sports. That's men and women. I would guess
somewhere around 300-350. If you pay them (As suggested by the OP) $100 a week, that would be about $30,000 a week, I think. Now multiply that by 52 weeks....Keep in mind...as a whole...Football is the only sport that makes money on the college level. Basketball breaks even and the rest lose money and are supported by student fees, tax money and football revenue.

Now, if you are a regular student, and you are struggling with grades and do not work (So you CAN study), why should a guy with a chance to make it in pro ball and on a full scholarship get money while you struggle?

And who do you think is making more money now? You, or Patrick Peterson?

As I stated, MOST (all but those listed above) have to use subsidy money to make college sports happen. That money from the TV contracts is included in that.

They can, or they used to be able to. (I assume theys till can) But, in fairness, it is difficult for them to. With their practice and workout schedules, it is tough on athletes. I admit, that. BUT< they are getting free education, free place to live and free food.

They already get stipends:

-for food
-if they decide they want to live off campus instead of athletic dorms

I do not buy this, unless you are in med school or some other demanding form of grad school.

Any undergrad should be able to have a part time job and still make good grades. Millions do. I did. My wife did.

Then again, if you are at Kennesaw State, maybe you aren't the brightest star in the sky to begin with, but that's another topic.

So Steve Spurrier is an idiot and doesn't understand how college athletics works? I'm not an expert, that's for sure, but if they already get stipends, why would Spurrier support stipends if they already exist? Is he going senile?

Well he's likely talking about general stipends. The ones I'm talking about are for specific purposes.

Okokok. Good point!

But, he also got a free education. To pay every athlete would be enormous, even if it was "only" $100.00 a month. AND, remember, no matter where you work, your company makes money on you. If you make $50,000.00 a year, your company is making much more than that off your work. They have to, to cover all their other expenses and to make some type of profit. Someone already pointed out that the vast majority of colleges are not making a profit. Think about how much money it costs for the equipment, trainers, coaches, stadium maintenance not to mention hwo much a road game costs for transportation, hotels, food, etc.

Hey...I don't know the answer. When I was playing, I felt the same as you do. Now that I am a much more objective observer....I'm not so sure.
