? My daughter (19 yrs old) just rented one from Enterprise in Tuscaloosa a couple of months ago while having body work done on her car - she had no problem renting it.

Nah. Most will rent certain cars to you younger than that with some restrictions.

Possessing the gun didn't violate the law, so Guerriero said were no grounds for further searches. The attorney said it wasn't clear if the car occupants gave consent to search the vehicle.

Except that the police report explicitly states that there was a "strong odor of marijuana". That's what you call probable cause.

As I've said, this illegal search defense is a pretty transparent effort to make an abortion of justice palatable. It gives the illusion that there was no favoritism, when it's patently obvious that there was.

No need to defend the indefensible, guys. Just enjoy your victory.

Also, I love how these stories conveniently leave out the stolen gun.
I guess since the defense attorney deems that there was an illegal search, that doesn't matter either.

Saban's not bound by the rules of search and seizure so, let's wait to see what punishment he doles out. Clearly, anything less than 3 game suspension is complete BS

So basically Louisiana cops are bad at their jobs...

but will this curtail the "preferential treatment" angle?

NO.

Why did the charges get dropped? Because there was going to be public scrutiny on the case. Once they get some kids from the poor parts, it will be business as usual for corrupt LA cops.

And I don't mean Los Angeles.

Sounds like you guys need better cops and DAs. They've dropped the ball time and time again. See Jeremy Hill.

car I'm sure those fine boys were just tuckered out from working a night at the local resuce mission.

Or, as the DA said, they were sweating while we were sitting in AC.

Maybe because they can't be certain it belongs to Cam since there were two other people in the car (if there were actually others in the car - I honestly don't have a clue whats going on any more)

Then the driver takes the charge.

Probably because it was
A) on your insurance and they paid for it while her's is being worked on
Or
B) had a valid credit card

In the case of the Bama players all they likely needed was proof of insurance and a valid credit card. Just my guess from previous experience renting cars in the past prior to turning 25. I think you also have to buy their insurance as well if you are under 21. I've never worked for a rental company though so idk exactly what they require.

As some one who has dealt with the MPD and the DA involved I never thought the two would go to jail. Thought they would reduce charges and then disappear with 6 months of good behavior. Most first time offenders in LA would have gotten off with reduced charges. It happens all the time. Trials cost money and these parishes aren't rolling in the dough

The point, who had the stolen gun, Cam or one of the other two in the car?

It's Cams car. Did one of the other kids confess to a felony weapons charge?

1gram of pot. It took 28grams to make an oz. back in the 70s. They had no case for possession.
A rental car with a gun under the seat. They had no case.
Two other dudes in the car who were let go before arrest.
The DA is trying to save the Parrish a law suit.

The only thing I'm amazed by is that they ever make it to work at all with all the illegal car searching the police are doing.
