Missouri AD Mike Alden is stepping away from his post, effective Aug. 31.

quote:

Dear Mizzou Family:
I hope that the New Year has started off well for you and your family. We are excited about Mizzou Athletics in 2015. Your support and your passion drives our University and helps "Prepare Champions for Life".

After several months of contemplation, I have decided that it is time for a change, both for me and for the University that I so dearly love. I have informed Chancellor Loftin of my decision to step down as the Director of Athletics effective August 31, 2015. My wife, Rockie, our son, Jake, and I have had an incredible experience at Mizzou and this is simply our next step in our journey in Columbia. We are proud of what we have accomplished over the past seventeen years, which is a lifetime for an athletics administrator. I am most proud of our tremendous coaches, staff and student-athletes and how they represent our University with academic integrity, social responsibility and competitive excellence.

But my journey at Mizzou is not coming to a close. As one chapter ends, another one begins and I am excited that I will be a part of the College of Education as an instructor where I will participate in the Positive Coaching Program and higher education leadership courses.

In addition, the College of Education, in concert with other campus partners, will be launching a Center for Global Service Learning Leadership. The Center will harness the tremendous service interests of our students and faculty into leadership curriculum allowing us to take our campus to the next step in the development of our students and our positive impact on the world. I have worked for many years as a volunteer, organizer and advisor in this area and I am thrilled to make this passion now my work.

I look forward to continuing to work with all of you in the coming months and assisting with the transition. Great things lie ahead for Tiger Athletics and the University of Missouri. M-I-Z!

Sincerely,

Mike Alden
Michael F. Alden
Director of Athletics

WE REJOICE!!!

But, in all seriousness, thanks for some of the things you did for Mizzou. Been a good decade, however, you suck at hiring.

He was a great fundraiser but left some to be desired with sports. Pinkel made him almost singlehandedly.

He got Mizzou athletics to "good". Now it's time for an AD who can take us to the next level (like winning a conference or national championship).

So was this expected? I thought I had seen some Mizzou folks mention he was possibly going to be moving out in the near future.

I knew Mizzou was taking the loss on Saturday pretty hard, but this is unexpected.

It wasn't expected by any means, but a lot of fans have been calling for his head for several years now in regards to the basketball program. He lost and never regained the support of a significant amount of fans after the Quin Snyder debacle. He obviously kept butchering the basketball program even after that, which disillusioned a lot of fans despite the football success.

Gotcha. That must've been it then.

Any idea who you guys will look at for a replacement?

I think it was coming for awhile, just seemed like a good time to get out of the game.

Here is to hoping we get a decent AD....because they will be finding a football coach in a few years after pinkel retires

Honestly, no idea. This was completey out of the blue. The presser wasn't announced until about 20 minutes ago so nobody saw this coming.

I would guess they might look at Ross Bjork from Ole Miss. He was groomed in the Mizzou AD before accepting the position at Ole Miss. Mark Alnutt is in the same category...he's currently at Southeast Missouri but was also a Mizzou AD guy.

Temporary position until he's named next SEC Commissioner.

First person I thought of. Either him or Whit Babcock, who is now at VT.

Mixed feelings on this announcement. On the one hand, he helped revitalize our football program, he hired Gary Pinkel, and helped us in our move to the SEC.

On the other hand, he has a terrible hiring record for basketball and has contributed to the program's demise. Overall, he's done good things for our athletic program but I feel like a new A.D. could take us to higher heights.
