Poor guy went though a lot in his later life. His wife died in 1988, got prostate cancer in 2001, and went through kidney dialysis since 2011,
His house had some pretty bad damage from the Tornado in Tupelo about 4 months ago.

RIP. Had the pleasure of meeting him and actually be interviewed by him during pre-game of a UK/State basketball game in Starkville in 1982. True gentleman. Reminded me of Caywood

well he led a good life and put up the good fight. Still sorry to see him leave us.What an SEC legend. Always loved driving through Mississippi either going to or leaving an LSU game and getting to hear Cristil do a State game.
Thanks for the memories,Jack.

Being new to the SEC, I never heard his play by play but I noticed in his obit, that he began doing MSU games in 1953.
It is sad that those old time broadcasters are moving on. The ones that describe a game on radio are truly creative people. There are still some old ones still left but sadly most go into TV where they just regurgitate what you see for yourself.
In Texas people like Kern Tipps on the old Humble SWC radio network could paint a picture with their vocal cords.
Condolences to his family and especially his MSU family..

Over his 58 year tenure, Cristil called 636 football games (or roughly 63% of all football games played by Mississippi State) and 1,538 basketball games (or roughly 55% of all basketball games played by Mississippi State).
Untill he retired 3 years ago most fans had never heard anyone else. Miss being able to hear that voice through the static and knowing I had found the State game no matter where I was.
RIP Jack

I got to the Hump early about 10 years ago and ran into Jack at one of the concessions. It was an honor and pleasure to meet him and shake his hand and thank him for the memories, in person. He was a genius behind a mic.

I used to love hearing him describe State's uniforms: Maroon headgear, maroon jerseys with white numerals and gray trousers with maroon piping. Numerals, trousers and piping. The man was one of the best.

It was Halloween, 1992. I was in a friend's lake house, just outside of Blairsville, Ga. I remember aiming an AM radio all sorts of ways, slowly, frustratingly, scrolling the static dial, hoping to have that same sound out home radiate from the speaker. After spending over 3 hours annoying everyone who was with us, I finally found a faint trace of it, just as Jeff Artigues blocked a kick, to preserve victory for the Bulldogs.
How the internet has forever removed me, thankfully, from reoccurrence of that scenario.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Jack.

Not many of the old voices left. I'm thinking Eli Gold is the Sr Voice it the SEC. The new generation can not paint a picture of the game like some of the old voices.

Iron Puppet - amazing that we posted the same thought about a great broadcaster at the same time.

Today's group doesn't do down and distance very well. The old group would tell you the direction play (right to left), down and distance, winds, players in motion with the home town thrown in. Todays group are trying to get on the SECN.
