I'm tired of talking shite when winning 8 or 9 games. Coaches get fired for that at most SEC schools.

Jackson is terrible.

Jackson is your typical Southeastern U.S. city, only without a draw like a Beale Street or a Bourbon St. or a University/college scene like a Baton Rouge. If there were something to rally around in Jackson, say, the state flagship institution, it would be much more appealing IMO. Imagine Memorial Stadium being a 90,000+ seat SEC stadium and the Fondren area being a nice bar scene that feeds off of that.

ETA: Not to mention the Reservoir area. A flagship university in Jackson would have doubled the size and the economy of that city at least. Too bad the people at the time didn't have the vision to see it.

A friend of mine has a mom who works in a hospital in Jackson and said that about %75 of African Americans that walk in for general entrees are diagnosed with some form of HIV.

You should've seen the "sidewalk fans" buying up all the Auburn gear in Meridian 2010..

Its a shite hole.

My girlfriend is from there and so are half my friends from college. Its a complete shite hole. The food scene is bad, the bar scene is bad (and I've been to them all a lot), and there is simply nothing to do.

Madison is nice (my gf's family lives on the reservoir now), but it is getting over crowded.

I am not saying Baton Rouge isn't a shite hole, but there is tons of bars downtown now and the crime/poverty is contained for the most part in North Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge shittyness < Jackson's epic shittyness.

Neither approaches Birmingham in overall shittyness. frick BHAM.

Jackson probably would have been identical to Baton Rouge if there was a single state school that was there from the beginning.

Meh.

South Louisiana's culture is VASTLY different than that in Jackson, MS.

Catholic v. Non-Catholic Baby Murderers (I kid, I kid)

Drinking/alcoholism and cajun cuisine culture is so different from the bible belt area of JAckson. First Pres is where all the gossip goes down in Jackson. Everybody knows everything about everybody's business.

JAckson is WAYY more traditional Southern. And besides Eastover, Jackson itself has completely moved to other cities.

I actually agree.

Jackson is a funny place. People that live there for the most part absolutely love it, but they continue to elect fricking idiots who, for decades, have run that damn city into the ground. That, and the white flight to Madison and Rankin counties hurt the city a lot.

That being said, there are still some redeeming cultural qualities to Jackson, not the least of which is Jackson's food scene. When I visit family and friends I always make a point to eat at a few places I can't live without.

South Lousiana culture is VASTLY different from the rest of the country. I still submit that there are other nice places around the South, including the Bible Belt, that have great bar scenes and downtown areas despite not having South Louisiana culture - most of the other SEC college towns come to mind. A state college scene would certainly enhance that in Jackson.

Hell, I'm not even sure Baton Rouge and Jackson, culture-wise, are all that different. There is an element of Jackson that is influenced by New Orleanian, French Quarter style culture. The surrounding state and suburbs I'll grant you are hardcore Bible Belt, but Jackson has a certain unique culture that could be tapped into.

You think people in Jackson don't like to drink?

This. Jackson does have a subculture that isn't traditionally Southern. You see it in bits and pieces, and some aspects of it remind me a lot of South Louisiana. The St. Paddys Day Parade has a certain Mardi Gras feel to it on a much smaller scale. The older architecture is certainly French Quarteresque. Most people don't realize that Jackson was actually one of the few staunch anti-war strongholds during the Civil War - that is until the North burned it to the ground.

And you're right, hardcore Jacksonians love their city and see the potential, but there is a crime problem, the city is a majority poorer African Americans and most of the middle class has fled to the suburbs. The leadership has lacked vision, and the leaders that do have vision don't have any power. The city council is an absolute joke.
