It's $40 to join the Alabama Alumni Association, and anyone can join.

If that's "shite-tons of money" to someone athletics are the last thing they need to be concerned with.

I know how much it costs. But your buddy was referring to perennially buying season tickets as one of his examples so anyone with a brain can see that he was referring to more than just the $40 minimum donation.

I didn't make the original statement, but yeah. That's exactly what he meant.

It's cheap to contribute to an alumni association, athletic department or to purchase season tickets to softball or whatever.

Minimum requirement: Cheer for the team.

Sure, it rankles a little when the bandwagon fans start jumping on. But that's how you build a fan base.

I've been faithful to Mizzou Baseball year in and year out even when the team sucked and it was just me and a bunch of players' parents and girlfriends in the stands. It's a bit annoying when newbie fans jump on after the team finally wins a conference championship and start acting like they know everything about MU Baseball.

But I welcome them and don't give them too much grief, because the more the merrier. That's how you grow a program is by picking up new fans in the good years.

I don't care if they ever took a class at Mizzou (I didn't), whether they live in Columbia, whether they donate to the Tiger Scholarship Fund or anything else. I', just glad for more people at the party.

Then how do you know exactly what he meant if you didn't make the statement?

It sure came off the wrong way.

Pretty much a combination of everything in this thread, except of course the agtard that said you have to donate shite tons of money to them. I understand, like many, that you dont have to be rich to be a fan of a team. Some people cant afford to donate a bunch of money to their school of preference and that has absolutely nothing to do with their fandom.

yep this is why harvey is a true fan, the man is poor as frick and spent his life savings on tickets and then is willing to risk his freedom for bama.

oh and the worst type of fan is the LSU football fan/unc basketball fan.

Huh ?
Non PSU grads paying taxes in PA are not allowed to laugh that every academic risk in our state that seems bound for 13th grade ends up @ WVU ?

More people are concerned with cooking the books to qualify a kid in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Is that denigrating another's academic prowess ?

Didnt read all the replies but here is my take on being a fan of a team.

Obviously being an alumnus is an automatic qualifier but also being a fan of the school is really what being a fan is. Keeping up and watching sports of all the different teams is also what can make you a fan. I am a huge Alabama football fan and soon to be alumnus but I also watch Alabama baseball and softball and casually watch Alabama basketball but I dont like basketball so I don't do too much to keep up with that.

Also, you don't have to be an alumnus to donate to a schools Alumni foundation or athletic department. Buying season tickets shows support and I worked for the Alumni association at UA and we had a lot of non-alumni that donated to the school. I don't consider buying team apparel as donating to the school at all.

My family is in this buisness. The licensing system in college football is lucrative.

Alabama does not have to divide their deal with the rest of the SEC, so in a round about way merchandising finds it's way back to the universities.

The 2010 top 25:
1. Texas, 2. Alabama, 3. Florida, 4. LSU, 5. North Carolina, 6. Georgia, 7. Michigan, 8. Kentucky, 9. Penn State, 10. Oklahoma, 11. Notre Dame, 12. Tennessee, 13. West Virginia, 14. Nebraska, 15. Auburn, 16. Wisconsin, 17. Kansas, 18. Missouri, 19. Florida State, 20. Arkansas, 21. Texas A&M, 22. Illinois, 23. South Carolina, 24. Texas Tech, 25. Clemson

Some schools will not disclose the figures. Absent from the list is Ohio State & Southern Cal
not due to lack of sales but due to lack of data.
