Chason Virgil was known for putting up big numbers as a quarterback at West Mesquite. Unfortunately, he was also known for being the guy who got his scholarship pulled despite doing nothing wrong.

Remember that two years ago?

Virgil had accepted a scholarship offer from Mississippi State in the spring of 2014, and by the fall, he was on track to graduate in December and enroll early. But then his scholarship was pulled by Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen.

West Mesquite coach Jeff Neill called the move "classless."

Virgil then signed with Fresno State and now, as a redshirt freshman, he has been named starter. Here's what Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said about Virgil in this Fresno Bee story.

"HE HAS A POISE ABOUT HIM THAT IS UNIQUE FOR A GUY WHO REALLY HASN'T PLAYED THAT MUCH FOOTBALL. BUT THE BIGGEST THING IS WHEN HE'S IN THAT HUDDLE, THE GUYS HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIM AND HE LIFTS EVERYONE TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL."

Something else of note about Virgil from the same story. Although only a redshirt freshman, he was named one of the team's four captains.

Now Mullen is relying on Last Chance U for a backup.

So why did Mullen pull the scholarship? He's pretty well a QB coach, so I can't imagine him just pulling it for shits and giggles if the kid is that good.

Mullen liked Virgil and thought he didn't deserve to be stuck in Starkville so he did him a favor. Pretty admirable to put the kid before his team IMO

Well, he's not that good. Very very small. And no he didn't not do anything wrong. He was told what he needed to do and didn't do it.

What did he need to do that he didn't do?

Also, the kid is listed at 6'2. That's not huge for a QB but it's not really all that small either.

Yes, he pulled the scholly for no reason. Kid is a good citizen. Had turned down other offers and at the last minute he was left out in the cold.

It was pulled just a few months before he graduated early so he could enroll in the Spring semester.

Texas High School coaches are steamed at Mullen and they have long memories.

Why didn't he tell him that at the beginning of recruiting? Why screw the kid at the last minute after all of his offers were gone?

Don't want him? Don't offer.

Hines decommitted from MSU a short time later.

Mullen screwed himself in the State of Texas.

He was set to enroll early. What exactly did he not do?
Too small doesn't seem to be an issue when you get the Last chance U QB.

Listed at 6'2. "Listed". Weighs about 150. And there were other issues. Why make those public if you're Stare and hurt the kid. If he's that good, whyhe at Fresno state? And don't act like "omg! He didn't have no time to go anywhere else! Omg!!!" Another team would've found room if he could get them wins. He was told what he needed to be at at a certain date. He wasn't. It's the SEC. It's not tiddlywinks. But I guess that's why the Aggies just can't seem to cut it.

I think there should be some reason, especially if Mullen is a QB coach.

Genuinely curious, was there some sort of team rule he broke?

It's the usual state fan line.

They know information about all things but only speak vaguely because well who the hell knows why. My guess is because they don't actually know jack shite.

Which is worse?

Being brutally honest and pulling a kids scholly while he still has a chnce to go elsewhere?

Or

Lying and telling QBs anything just to get them to campus? And when they get to campus, they find out they are so disenchanted with the reality vs the promises that they transfer as quickly as possible, even announcing their transfer mid-season.

That is totally wrong. Early in recruiting he had multiple offers. (including other SEC schools.)

When he committed to Mullen, everyone else backed off. At the last minute Mullen has a shot at another QB and so he dropped Vigil.

He was months from graduating and was looking at Junior Colleges because the rest of the coaches have ethics and would not drop a kid to take Vigil.

Fresno State recruits Texas hard and had an opening. They offered him and he took it.

Fresno has a history of good QB's and I am happy it turned out OK for him but I know for a fact Mullen's move is known throughout the Texas High School coaches and they will not get any help.

Would not want to be the Miss State coach responsible for recruiting Texas.

So, is relying on Last Chance U for a starter supposed to be a better look or something?
